Recipients of 2005 Distinguished Scholar Award at Kent State University Announced

Three faculty members received the 2005 Distinguished Scholar Award Monday, April 4, as part of the University Research Council’s 11th annual Celebration of Scholarship at Kent State University. They are: Kathleen Browne, professor of art; Per Enflo, University Professor of mathematics; and Marvin Troutt, professor in management and information systems.

Kathleen Browne is a professor of art in the School of Art and came to Kent State University in 1992. She received her B.A. from San Diego State University in 1983 and her M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1986. Her artwork has been exhibited in more than 150 exhibitions both in the United States and abroad, and has been published and/or reviewed in numerous publications such as Metalsmith, American Craft, New Art Examiner, The New York Times, Dialogue, The Plain Dealer and The San Francisco Chronicle. Her artwork has been published in five books, and she has written a number of reviews, articles and catalogue essays for various publications. She is the recipient of five Artist Fellowship Grants from the Ohio Arts Council.

Per Enflo is a university professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Kent State. He has earlier held positions at the University of California-Berkeley, Stanford University, Ecole Polytechnique, Paris and The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. Enflo's mathematical contributions fall mainly within the area of functional analysis, where he solved three fundamental problems — "The Basis Problem," "The Approximation Problem" and "The Invariant Subspace Problem" — which had been open for more than 40 years. Enflo has also done interdisciplinary work, applying mathematics to other sciences — acoustics, computer science, population genetics/anthropology — and he is currently part of an NSF-supported project in biocomplexity. He has advised 20 students who have earned a Ph.D. and is currently advising both graduate and undergraduate students. Enflo had an early career as a concert pianist and continues to be an active performer.

Marvin D. Troutt is a professor in the Department of Management and Information Systems. He is a f ellow of the Decision Sciences Institute and served as associate editor of Decision Sciences for 17 years. He received a Ph.D. in mathematical statistics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has coauthored a research monograph, Vertical Density Representation, and his articles have appeared in Decision Sciences, Management Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society, European Journal of Operational Research, Operations Research, Decision Support Systems and others. His current research interests include the statistics of performance data and applications of optimization methods.

The Distinguished Scholar Awards have been an annual tradition at Kent State since 1997, and 27 faculty members, including those who received the award this year, have earned this distinction.

The award committee, which is associated with the University Research Council, oversees the process. R. Scott Olds, adult, counseling, health and vocational education and Larry Starzyk, English, co-chaired this year’s committee.
