Consider Five Tips for Greener Grass and Cleaner Water
The days are getting cooler and the nights are getting longer. Like it or not, summer is almost over. But don’t pack up the mower and rev up the snow plow just yet. Your lawn is preparing for its winter sleep. According to the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA), properly caring for your lawn year-round can both enhance its appearance and benefit water quality.
Use these tips in your seasonal lawn care to improve your lawn and your water:
-
Use regionally adapted, healthy plants that can absorb and filter rainfall and runoff from melted snow.
-
Apply quick-release fertilizer during the fall to help the grass build root systems and store energy for the winter.
-
Use fallen leaves as winter or summer mulch; or compost and shred leaves and leave on the lawn to enrich the soil.
-
Mow high — keeping your lawn a bit long — to produce stronger, healthier blades of grass for fewer pest problems.
-
Water slowly and deeply throughout the fall, but only when the lawn needs it.
By following good late-summer and fall lawn care practices, you will better prepare your lawn for winter and be rewarded with a quick green-up in the spring. Plus, a healthy lawn can prevent soil erosion, filter contaminants from rainwater, and contribute to overall quality in the water supply.
For more information on water quality and lawn care, visit the EPA Web site.
This article is being published in e-Inside as part of the action plan developed for the city of Kent and Kent State to improve the quality of storm water discharges. Watch for upcoming e-Inside articles designed to educate the university community about lawn and garden care.
