Midterm Results Are In
Freshmen midterm grades are directly linked to retention rates, according to research findings from the Office of Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness. And university officials took heed. After weeks of programming aimed at encouraging students to attend classes and study for midterms, all aimed at boosting freshmen midterm grades, the results of the campaign are in. The percentage of Kent Campus first-time freshmen with a 2.0 or above GPA at midterm jumped from 65.2 last year to 69 percent. This increase may play a vital role in keeping students at Kent State. “Protecting students’ GPAs at the onset will predict everything for their future success,” says Tim Moore, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “The improved midterm grades are evidence the university community is dedicated to this goal.” About 80 percent of Kent Campus freshmen with a fall midterm GPA of 2.0 or higher persist to their sophomore year. About 50 percent of Kent Campus students persist if their fall midterm GPA is below a 2.0. The 4 percent increase is significant, says Sally Kandel, associate vice president for Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness , but the real results won’t be evident until next fall when her office determines how many students returned to Kent State. The breakdown of fall midterm grades is shown in the table below.
