Newly Formed College of the Arts Helps Students Imagine, Create, Transform

Kent State students studying art, theatre and dance, music and fashion, are now part of a newly-formed College of the Arts that was approved by the university’s Board of Trustees on July 1, 2006.

College of the Arts at Kent State UniversityThe College of the Arts, composed of the schools of Art, Fashion Design and Merchandising, Music, and Theatre and Dance, along with the Kent State University Museum, were combined because the programs have similar outlooks and goals, says Dr. Timothy J. Chandler, dean of the College of the Arts.

“The new College of the Arts unites the arts and provides a greater focus and a stronger identity for these programs,” Chandler says.

College of the Arts coursework focuses on expanding knowledge and skills in performance, creation, theory, criticism and history in one’s chosen major. Students learn to respect the past, while looking toward a future full of innovation and creativity.

“Faculty members within each of the units in the college are committed to encouraging students to imagine, and to providing them ongoing opportunities to create,” he says. “In so doing they enable students to transform themselves and their world through work in the arts.”
