Alumni Stories Needed for New Campus Tour

Students walk through the esplanade area on the south side of campus. The esplanade runs from the Front campus all the way to the library and the Risman Plaza. The Center for Student Involvement and the Office of Alumni Relations is developing a new campus tour based on Kent State history, traditions and folklore.

The Center for Student Involvement and the Office of Alumni Relations needs your assistance. We are currently developing a new campus tour based on Kent State history, traditions and folklore. This would be a special tour, offered at various times throughout the year, including Week of Welcome and Homecoming. Part of the fun of this tour is sharing actual stories that alumni, faculty or staff may have about our currently identified tour stops. The locations are:

· North Campus
· Franklin Hall
· Oscar Ritchie Hall
· Stockdale Hall
· The Visitor Parking lot in front of the Kent Student Center (any stories from when it was the football stadium)
· Stopher Hall
· Dunbar Hall
· Lilac Lane/May 4, 1970

If anyone has stories to share related to any of these locations, please send them to nso@kent.edu by Friday, Feb. 2. If you have any questions about this project, please contact Brenda McKenzie at bmckenzi@kent.edu, 330-672-2480 or Nancy Schiappa at nschiapp@kent.edu, 330-672-5368.

Public Relations Faculty Member Wins National Advising Award

Michelle Ewing, APR, assistant professor and Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Kent State chapter faculty advisor, was honored with the 2006 Teahan Chapter Faculty Advisor Award at the national PRSA/PRSSA conference in Salt Lake City.

Students meet many professors throughout their years on campus, but to find the professors who make a lasting impression you must go beyond the classrooms.

Michele Ewing, APR, assistant professor and Public Relations Student Society of American (PRSSA) Kent State chapter faculty advisor, takes the time to make that connection with her students.

From that effort and eagerness to help students succeed, she has been honored with the 2006 Teahan Chapter Faculty Advisor Award presented at the national PRSA/PRSSA conference in Salt Lake City in November.

PRSSA focuses on cultivating relationships between students and public relations professionals and has more than 270 chapters on college campuses across the country.

Last July, four members nominated Ewing as a thank you for all of her dedication and motivation she brought to the chapter throughout the year. The award recognizes her leadership and students’ efforts with the PRSSA Kent State chapter.

“It’s always rewarding to have your work recognized, but it’s truly the students’ hard work and dedication that captured the national attention,” Ewing said. “In my eyes, the award honors the success of my students.”

In 2005 the Kent State PRSSA chapter, under Ewing’s direction, won the Teahan award for Outstanding PRSA/PRSSA Chapter Relationship in conjunction with the Akron PRSA chapter. Last spring, she also won the Advisor Excellence Award from the Center for Student Involvement.

“Michele’s ability to motivate is in her ‘lead by example’ approach to advising. As students, we became great leaders and PRSSA officers, not only because Michele encouraged us to, but also because she showed us how,” said Elaine Laps, 2005-2006 Kent PRSSA Chapter President and Assistant Account Executive, Akhia Public Relations in Hudson.

Ewing’s work as a teacher and researcher has also been recognized by other organizations. She earned a development grant for the University Teaching Council, and earlier this year she was named a Moulton Teaching Scholar at Kent State. These awards provided resources to develop and enhance her new course, Public Relations Online Tactics.

“I strive to take a personal interest in my students’ success,” Ewing said. “I encourage students to find their passion in the public relations field. I learn about their career interests and show students how involvement in PRSSA can help them expand networking with PR professionals and obtain a range of PR experience during their college education and beyond.”

Before joining the KSU faculty in 2003, Ewing served as a vice president in the public relations division at Marcus Thomas, an advertising and public relations agency in Cleveland. Ewing earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communications/ telecommunications from Youngstown State University. She holds a master’s degree in public relations/journalism from Kent State University. She resides in Berlin Center with her husband, David, and their two children.

“American Routes” Travels to WKSU, Fridays at 7 p.m.

“American Routes” host Nick Spitzer (right) visits with famed vocalist Aaron Neville during one of the shows. WKSU, a service of Kent State University that broadcasts National Public Radio (NPR) and classical music at 89.7 FM, has added the two-hour music program to its lineup, which can be heard Fridays at 7 p.m.

WKSU, a service of Kent State University that broadcasts National Public Radio (NPR) and classical music at 89.7 FM, has added the two-hour music program “American Routes” (pronounced “roots”) to its lineup. The show made its debut on Friday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. Produced in New Orleans and hosted by Nick Spitzer, “American Routes” is a weekly excursion into the country’s rich and diverse musical styles and traditions.

A Smithsonian folklorist, Spitzer presents listeners the familiar and the less well-known as “American Routes” travels to places where genres such as rock and roll, jazz, country, blues, zydeco, klezmer and others – from the familiar to the unusual – thrive. The program is consistently eclectic or, as Spitzer says, “Somebody’s cultural icon comes up every third song.” Along with the sounds of the country, “American Routes” also introduces the audience to the music makers with interviews and profiles of featured artists.

WKSU Program Director Vincent Duffy says, “I’m happy that we can give ‘American Routes’ a home in Northeast Ohio. Nick Spitzer has created a music program that is fun and informative and is the perfect compliment for WKSU’s celebrated Friday night folk show with host Jim Blum.”

Visit the WKSU Web site for more information on “American Routes.”
