Kent State Professor Jacquie Marino recently received the Gold Eddie Award.

Kent State’s Jacquie Marino, an assistant professor of magazine journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the recipient of a prestigious Gold Eddie Award. The Eddie Awards recognize excellence in magazine editorial and design and are given each year by Folio magazine.

Marino received the award for the article “Blood Brothers,” which appeared in Cleveland Magazine in June 2006. The article chronicled the experiences of several Marines from Brook Park's 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment. The 3/25 lost 48 Marines during one tour of duty in Iraq, 16 in a single week.

“It felt good to know that others were moved by the Marines’ story,” Marino said. She added that she was absolutely thrilled to receive the Gold Eddie Award.

Marino also has won many local awards as well as the national Clarion Award from the Association for Women in Communications in 2000. She has been a journalist for 13 years and has written for a variety of publications, such as The Plain Dealer, Memphis magazine and Agence France-Presse. Marino currently is a contributing editor of Cleveland Magazine.

Marino has been an assistant professor at Kent State since the fall of 2006. She teaches feature writing, news writing and magazine publishing regularly. Next semester, she is teaching political journalism, a new special topics class she created with Thom Yantek, a professor of political science.

Marino graduated from Kent State in December 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication and a bachelor’s degree in political science. In May 2002, she graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a master’s degree in nonfiction writing.
