Kent State Professors to Receive Education Awards From Coleman Foundation, April 3Return to Issue of March 24, 2008
Two Kent State professors have been recognized for their exceptional achievements in education by the Coleman Foundation, a philanthropic organization located in Kent that is designed to support children, families and older adults facing mental health and rehabilitation challenges. Dr. Joseph Drew, associate professor of political science, and Dr. Terry Lee Kuhn, emeritus vice provost and dean for undergraduate studies, will receive “Educator of the Year” awards, presented by the Burbick Foundation, on Thursday, April 3, at Aurora High School. Awards are given in five categories to honor educators for their excellent teaching skills, dedication to students’ total development and ability to act as mentors to both their students and to other teachers. An independent community-based committee selects the winners.
Drew won the college/university award category, while Kuhn will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award. In recognition of their contributions to the field of education, each will receive a $1,000 prize. “The committee selected Dr. Joseph Drew unanimously after learning from his nominator, Jeff Langstaff, about Dr. Drew's tireless efforts to break down barriers to accessibility. Dr. Terry Lee Kuhn was selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts to establish developmental academic advising at Kent State,” says Connie Skingel, director of annual giving at the Coleman Foundation. She adds, “The Coleman Foundation is honored to have the opportunity to inform the community about the outstanding achievements of these two educators.” The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a hearty hors d’oeuvre reception where guests will have the opportunity to meet the honorees and their nominators. Tickets for the reception are $50 for adults and $25 for students. The award ceremony will begin at 7:15 p.m. and is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to attend.
