Kent State Stark Presents 2008-09 Featured Speakers Series

For more than 15 years, Kent State University Stark has been exposing students and community members to a wide range of topics and issues that shape our society through the popular Featured Speakers Series. The recently announced 2008-09 season will welcome award-winning journalist Michele Norris, satirical actor Rob Corddry, astronomer Mike Brown and animal adventurer Jack Hanna.

On Monday, Sept. 29, Michele Norris visits the campus. An award-winning journalist with more than two decades of experience, Norris hosts National Public Radio’s newsmagazine All Things Considered, public radio’s longest-running national program. Before joining National Public Radio, Norris was a correspondent for ABC News, a post she held from 1993 to 2002. She has reported extensively on education, inner city issues, the nation’s drug problem and poverty. Norris also reported for the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times. For her contributions to ABC News’ coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks, she earned both an Emmy and a Peabody Award. Tickets for the event are available now at the Main Hall Information Desk.

Rob Corddry will present “According to Corddry: An Evening With America’s New Best Friend” on Monday, Oct. 27. A former correspondent for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Corddry has spent the last 10 years treading a fine line between theatre and comedy. His resume includes a number of commercials, NBC’s Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Dreamworks’ movie Old School and the title roles in the film Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story and Fox television’s sitcom The Winner. The comical entertainer can also be seen in the films The Ten, Heartbreak Kid and Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. Tickets for the Corddry event will be available beginning on Monday, Oct. 6, at the Main Hall Information Desk.

On Tuesday, March 3, 2009, Dr. Mike Brown will present “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming. ” Brown, professor of planetary astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, specializes in the discovery and study of bodies at the edge of the solar system. He is best known for discovering our solar system’s largest object, leading to the eventual demotion of Pluto to a dwarf planet. Brown’s discussion is an extremely entertaining and fascinating look into his discoveries and the solar system. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times and Physics Today. In 2006, he was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. Tickets for the Brown event will be available beginning Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at the Main Hall Information Desk.

The series concludes with “Jack Hanna: Going Wild for Wildlife” on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Hanna, popular host of the television series Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, is one of America’s most beloved naturalists and adventurers. He began receiving national attention in 1978, when he became director of Ohio’s rundown Columbus Zoo. He transformed the zoo into a model facility and made it a household name. He is a regular guest on Good Morning America, Larry King Live and The Late Show With David Letterman. For his presentation at Kent State Stark, Hanna will be accompanied by a few of his animal friends. Tickets for the Hanna event will be available beginning Monday, March 30, 2009.

Each program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Professional Education and Conference Center’s Timken Great Hall, located at 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township.

All lectures are free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Three weeks prior to each event, tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Kent State Stark Main Hall Information Desk. No phone reservations will be taken. Tickets will be limited to four per person. The building will open at 6:45 p.m. prior to each event.
