| Administrative Professionals Week Celebrated at Kent StateReturn to Issue of April 20, 2009
This week, April 19-25, is Administrative Professionals Week, and Kent State will mark the observance by hosting its 12th annual Office Support Staff Recognition luncheon on Wednesday, April 22. The luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Kent State Student Center Ballroom. The Division of Human Resources sponsors the Office Support Staff Recognition Program each year, and it is the university's opportunity to recognize the hundreds of support staff who work within its departments, divisions and campuses. Support staff members from the eight campuses are invited to attend the luncheon, and this year’s attendees will enjoy entertainment in a carnival theme. Entertainment will be provided by a professional juggler, a balloon artist and a fortune teller who will do palm or crystal ball readings. Nationally, the observance of Administrative Professionals Day is coordinated by the International Association of Administrative Professionals. According to the group, there are more than 4.1 million secretaries and administrative assistants working in the United States. At Kent State, more than 600 support staff work throughout the eight campuses. Those employees have a variety of job titles and duties, ranging from administrative assistant, secretary and clerical specialist to office manager, personal assistant, records technician and more. Administrative Professionals Week was first recognized in 1952 as National Secretaries Week. The event was established as an effort to recognize secretaries for their contribution to the workplace and to attract people to secretarial/administrative careers. The name was changed multiple times, eventually ending with Administrative Professionals Week in 2000 to include the increasing responsibilities and job titles of administrative support staff. Administrative Professionals Week is one of the largest observances in the workplace, outside of employee birthdays and major holidays. Make sure to take time this week to recognize the support staff individuals in your unit and thank them for their contributions. The Office Support Staff Recognition program is organized by a committee of approximately 20 employees from various departments. Invitations to the event have been mailed, and reservations are required to attend.
