Journalism School, Flight Program Partner on Storytelling in the Sky

Stories That Fly combines flight and journalism.
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has partnered with the College of Technology's Aeronautics Program for Stories That Fly, a Web magazine which promises to take journalism to new heights, while telling the story of Ohio-born aviation and the legions of people involved in that industry.
People are inspired by flight and the capacity to move through the world in three dimensions. In Ohio, flying attracts, but it also employs and services a significant piece of the economy.
The light of the mainstream media often shines brightly on the jet drivers, millionaires and astronauts. But what most people don't know is that you are as likely to find them here in Ohio, at the local airfield with the other legends and leagues of hard-working folks whose lives are deeply rooted in the nation's birthplace of aviation.
Stories That Fly seeks to improve the public understanding and awareness of general aviation through the creation of digital narratives and stories designed to appeal to all. The Web magazine features the work of students, citizen journalists, aviation enthusiasts, professional writers, reporters, videographers and photographers.
A public launch of the Web magazine will take place Saturday, May 2, in Franklin Hall. The day's events include a reception at 11 a.m., a formal welcome at 11:30 a.m. and a video compilation and question and answer session with the creators of the site at 12:30 p.m. Dessert will follow.
An all-you-can eat hot dog and hamburger lunch will be offered at noon for $5 per person.
At 2 p.m., a tour of the airport and flight programs will be offered at the Kent State Airport. Participants who travel to the event by air can be picked up at the airport for the short drive back to the Kent Campus.
For more information about the project, go to www.storiesthatfly.com.

Former NFL quarterback Eric Hipple speaks in the Kent Student Center Kiva April 28.
Eric Hipple, former Detroit Lions quarterback, will discuss surviving depression and suicide loss at an April 28 discussion in the Kiva, sponsored by the Kent State University Office of Safety and Security and the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition.
Hipple, who played for the Lions in the 1980s, will talk about his own depression and his family's experience with the suicide of his 15 year-old son in 2000. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission and parking are free. The event is also being sponsored by Delta Tau Delta.
The Office of Safety and Security donated $1,220 last October to help sponsor educational activities of the Suicide Prevention Coalition.
"The gift from Kent State came at the same time we learned about Eric Hipple’s presentation," says Joel Mowrey, Ph.D., associate director of the Mental Health and Recovery Board and an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology and College of Education at Kent State. "We believe his talk will hit home with the audience in Northeast Ohio. We are grateful for the participation of Kent State that makes it possible to host the event on campus.”
Other event partners include the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition, the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County, the Coleman Foundation, the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation and Townhall II.
Hipple's 10-year career was spent entirely with the Detroit Lions. His accomplishments include two playoff bids and a divisional championship. In addition, he was named Most Valuable Player for the 1981 season. Hipple’s jersey hangs in the Canton Football Hall of Fame. He is ranked fifth in all-time career passing yards in the Detroit record books.

Mammograms are an important weapon in the battle against breast cancer.
The Women's Resource Center will offer screening mammograms to Kent State employees and spouses on May 5 and 6 on the Kent Campus. The center has contracted with Tiffany Breast Care Center of Youngstown for the event.
Mammograms take approximately 12 minutes and will be conveniently provided in Tiffany Breast Care's mobile mammography unit, which will be parked in front of the Women's Resource Center. Registration for a screening mammogram must be completed by May 1. Appointments will be available between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.
Aside from nonmelanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native women. Specific early detection recommendations include monthly breast self-examinations for women age 20 and older. Women ages 35-40 should have a first screening mammogram and women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram each year.
According to the 2005 figures from the Centers for Disease Control, 186,467 women and 1,764 men were diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, 41,116 women and 375 men died from the disease.
For additional information or to register, call the Women's Resource Center at 330-672-9230 or toll free at 1-866-339-3699. Participants will receive confirmation of appointment time and medical forms will be forwarded for completion prior to the screening.
