New York City native Anthony J. Mullen, who was recognized by President Barack Obama as the 2009 National Teacher of the Year, will present a Gerald H. Read Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Kiva on the Kent Campus.

Mullen served as a New York City police officer for 20 years before entering the teaching field. During that time he received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Long Island University. As a police officer, Mullen worked with troubled teenagers he described as “destined for prison unless they received the benefits of a quality education and positive adult role models.” Inspired to be that role model, Mullen earned a master’s degree in elementary education and special education from Mercy College in New York in 2001. He retired from his law enforcement career to pursue teaching and mentoring teenagers who need a second chance.

Mullen teaches 9th through 12th grades as a special education teacher at The ARCH School, an alternative education branch of Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut. He believes that “ a teacher can receive no greater reward than the knowledge that he or she helped recover a lost student.”

This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Linda Robertson, director of the Center for International and Intercultural Education in the College of Education, Health and Human Services, at lfrobert@kent.edu or call 330-672-0563.
