Human Resources Question: How Will the Change in Federal Minimum Wage Affect Kent State Employees?

Effective July 24, the federal minimum wage increased from $5.15 an hour to $5.85 an hour. It was the first federal minimum wage increase in 10 years. Kent State employees will not be affected by the new federal minimum wage.

On Jan. 1, 2007, the state of Ohio enacted legislation that set the minimum wage to at $6.85 an hour. Kent State falls under the Ohio minimum wage rate because it is greater than the federal standard.

Prior to the state change in the minimum wage amount, studies were done to determine if any Kent State employees fell below the new Ohio minimum wage. Student employees were the only group impacted by the minimum wage increase. Any adjustments have been made to bring student employees to the appropriate new Ohio pay level minimum.
