march against rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
This year's event will take place April 14.

There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." On April 14, the Office of Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services and the Women’s Center, in collaboration with other campus departments and student organizations at Kent State University, will host the fifth annual Walk a Mile in Their Shoes: A March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence.

Walk a Mile in Their Shoes is a playful opportunity for men to get involved in raising awareness in the community about the serious causes, effects and remediation to sexualized violence by wearing high-heeled shoes on a march across campus. Women can wear tennis shoes. The event is open to all members of the Kent State community.

Kent State faculty and staff are encouraged to join in the walk. Registration is ongoing now through April 14 and can be completed here. The first 200 to register will be guaranteed a free T-shirt. On April 14, check-in and registration begins at 4:30 p.m., with welcome and keynote speakers at 5:30 p.m. The walk begins at the Kent Student Center at 6 p.m., ending at 6:30 p.m. with awards and prizes.

Donations of women’s dress shoes with heels, sizes 11 and larger, are being requested. All shoe donations can be dropped off at the Carriage House on Alumni Drive (location of Kent State’s Women’s Center and Office of Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Service) Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Statistics from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network reveal that every two minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. One in six U.S. women is a victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. Please join in this campaign against sexual violence.
