Mark James Named Executive Director of Global Health Programs at Kent State’s College of Public Health

Mark A. James, Ph.D., has been recently appointed executive director of Global Health Programs at Kent State University’s College of Public Health. James began serving in this new position on July 1, 2011, and in the year prior, he served as dean of the college. An international expert on the immunity to malaria, James also is a full-time faculty member, teaching graduate-level courses on the immunology of infectious diseases starting Spring Semester 2012.
“I am excited about the opportunity to develop research and educational opportunities with international partner institutions,” James says. “Our mission is to create new opportunities in global health for Kent State students, as well as to foster interdisciplinary, collaborative research opportunities for faculty.”
The college’s global health program will include locations in Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia. The program will be built upon relationships that exist between the College of Public Health, Kent State University and international institutions. Academic offerings will include concentrated (two-week) and semester-long courses for undergraduate and graduate students held at international sites. Research projects and faculty exchanges also will be developed that link the college and other Kent State faculty with counterparts at partner institutions.
“The nature of global health research is such that a multidisciplinary approach is often necessary,” James says. “This model is consistent with the college’s core mission and will also be attractive to researchers in a wide variety of disciplines within the university.”
James has worked with Kent State’s Office of Global Education to sign Memoranda of Understanding agreements with two institutions in Colombia, one research institute in Argentina and the Macau University of Science and Technology in Macau, China. One of James’ goals is to attract top-quality international graduate students to the College of Public Health.
James notes, “Every time that I travel to Colombia and other international locations, I use the opportunity to talk about public health programs at Kent State. It is important to realize that public health issues have no boundaries or recognize international borders.”
