The presidents of Kent State University and Hanoi University have signed an agreement that will partner the universities in a student exchange program and will allow a collaboration with Kent State’s campus in Florence, Italy.

Kent State President Beverly Warren and Hanoi University President Nguyen Dinh Luan signed the historic agreement Sept. 8 on the second floor of University Library on the Kent Campus.

Hanoi University was established in 1959 and specializes in languages and tourism.

Todd Diacon, Kent State’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, visited Hanoi University in May along with Marcello Fantoni, Kent State’s associate provost for global education. Their visit began the framework for collaboration between Hanoi University and Kent State in the areas of translation and tourism.

Hanoi University has more than 500 students enrolled in its Italian language degree programs, thus leading to a natural partnership with Kent State’s Institute for Applied Linguistics and the Florence campus.

“They are an outstanding fit to partner with our students and faculty on foreign language and business,” Diacon says. “Hanoi University is Kent State’s first partner in Vietnam, and this agreement supports the university’s strategic plan to increase international enrollment.”

Earlier this year, Kent State expanded existing partnerships with Dankook University of Seoul, South Korea, to provide opportunities for more exchange students and for Dankook to develop a partnership with the Florence campus. Kent State also approved a unique partnership with the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia, that established the Advanced Pedagogy in Physical Education and Sport program within the Master of Education degree.
