Kent State University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hosted its fourth annual Athletics Scholarship Auction on Friday, April 24, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center).

The event, which was attended by 400 people and featured celebrity co-host and Kent State alumnus Josh Cribbs, raised more than $115,000 to benefit student-athlete scholarships, and $250,000 in the last three years since hosting it at the MAC Center.

"This was once again a fabulous event, and I couldn't be happier with the number of Kent State athletic supporters in attendance," says Joel Nielsen, director of athletics. “Of course, this event wouldn't be possible if it were not for the tireless work of the athletic advancement staff and members of the organizing committee. Due to the generosity of those at the auction last night, the monies raised will provide resources supporting scholarship opportunities and enhance the student-athlete experience."

Everyone who purchased a ticket by Feb. 20 was entered into a drawing to win two tickets to a VIP pre-party with Cribbs, a 2010 Kent State graduate and four-year starting quarterback for the Golden Flashes from 2001 to 2004.

“I had a blast tonight, and it was so much fun," says Cribbs. "I was excited to host the event this year because I love Kent State University. The blue and gold runs deep within my veins. My whole adult life started here, and I felt like this is the least I could do. Any time I have an opportunity to come back and be a part of Kent State University, I try to do it."

In eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Cribbs became one of the franchise's most popular players while earning three Pro Bowl selections. After playing for the New York Jets last season, Cribbs signed with Indianapolis midway through the 2014 campaign and solidified the Colts' return game during their march to the 2015 AFC Championship Game.

The more than 100 items that were up for bid in both silent and live auctions this year included various trips, a basketball signed by President Barack Obama, travel experiences with Kent State teams, fine jewelry and one-of-a-kind Kent State and sports memorabilia, including a bat from the movie The Natural signed by Robert Redford.

Along with a raffle for the chance to win a two-week vacation to Hawaii, the evening featured several gourmet food stations, an open bar, a "Wall of Wine" and the chance to meet and mingle with Kent State student-athletes and coaches.

“This event is a huge success because of the passion of our supporters," says Matthew Geis, senior associate athletic director and executive director of athletic advancement. “Their ongoing support plays a vital role in ensuring that our student-athletes have success in the classroom, in competition and in life.”
