Kent State University Police Services, the city of Kent police and fire and the Brimfield police and fire departments participated in joint training on Tuesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 12, in Johnson Hall on the Kent Campus.

The eight-hour training days included classroom training in topics such as emergency wound care, tactical movements and secondary explosive devices, and exercises involving officer solo entry and rescue teams in the hall’s rooms and hallways.

“The purpose of the training is to learn how to provide treatment to wounded people faster,” says Sgt. Jim Campbell of the Kent State Police Department. “We wanted to get all departments involved and on the same page because they would all be helping in the case of an emergency.”

This training was the first of its kind and focused primarily on what to do in the event of a school shooting. Campbell hopes the training occurs more often in the future.

“During the gun discharge outside Bowman Hall where the suspect accidently shot himself in the spring, all of the departments responded,” says Sgt. Nancy Shefchuk of the Kent State Police Department. “So all of us working together is important.”
