Posted Aug. 6, 2012 | Alexandria RhodesFor Kent State electronic media major Katy Coduto, working this summer as a publicity intern at renowned record label company Warner Brothers Records is a dream come true.
Coduto, who also is the program director at Kent State’s TV2, has always wanted to work in publicity and public relations.
“I realize how lucky I am to be working at Warner Brothers. I love publicity and public relations, and this is only solidifying in my mind that I’ve chosen a career I am going to love,” Coduto says.
Working at Warner Brothers Records
At the Warner Brothers Records office in New York, Coduto writes press releases for the eight bands that she works with. Her job involves getting newspapers, magazines and television stations to cover the bands and artists that she works for when they come into town.
“I feel like I’m getting a well-rounded label experience through these opportunities,” Coduto says. “I love that I can come away from my time here and say I know more than just writing press releases. There’s a depth and a breadth to what I’m doing.”
Payton Wang, Coduto’s supervisor at Warner Brothers Records, says that Coduto successfully integrated into the Warner Brother’s Music Group this summer through her experience at the company.
“Interning is important because it gives students the opportunity to see an industry and occupation beyond what can be explained in a classroom,” Wang says. “Summer internships specifically give students the chance to spend concentrated time in a work environment similar to what they hope to do post graduation.”
Experience for Life
Coduto says that overall her experience has been great and incredibly positive. She also credits her success to her education at Kent State.
“My Kent State experience has been one of the best experiences of my life,” she says. “I’ve taken every advantage Kent State has offered and I am so glad I did. I love telling people I know in New York about my school. I almost always end up rubbing it in a little.”
While working at her internship, Coduto is also planning ahead for the future. She will graduate with an electronic media degree in May 2013 and will continue to work on her master’s in media management.
“I definitely enjoy publicity and public relations so I’m hoping that I can begin my background in this field and work my way up into a media management position,” she says. ““The opportunities are just abounding at Warner Brothers, and I keep finding new ones every day.”
