Posted March 21, 2011Highlighting the excellence in action that occurs every day on its eight campuses, the university hosted Kent State Day at the Ohio Statehouse on March 16. A delegation of about 130 people, including Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton, university trustees, students, alumni, faculty, campus and college deans, and community partners, traveled to Columbus for the all-day event.
"Our goal here is to demonstrate to legislators that Kent State University is indispensible to the region and the state," Lefton says. "We want them to know that we're globally recognized, nationally ranked and locally vital. We get to show our pride in our great institution."
The day began with the interactive and engaging "Impact and Innovations Exhibit," which showcased the many exciting discoveries coming from Kent State, all of which contribute to talent development and job creation. The exhibit was on display much of the day in the museum area of the statehouse and focused on four main themes: Research, Innovation and Technology; Talent Development; Community Engagement and Economic Development; and Academic Success.
Members of the Ohio Legislature joined Lefton, the trustees and members of the delegation for coffee and conversation as they explored the exhibit. Mid-morning, the delegation broke into groups to meet with individual legislators and state leadership officials. After lunch, the university was recognized at both the Senate and House sessions.
"This was truly a universitywide effort involving numerous people, departments and colleges across our eight campuses," says Iris Harvey, vice president for University Relations. "I think we left quite an impression with the legislators, demonstrating Kent State's economic impact, development of talent and job creation, and contribution to innovation and competitiveness. As I like to remind people, we are the No. 1 public research university in Northeast Ohio – no doubt about it!"
