Academic Success Center Awarded Seven-Figure Grant to Fund Tutoring Programs

The grant will support a multitude of services.
The Kent State University Academic Success Center was recently awarded a five-year renewal of the TRiO/Student Support Services grant. The grant is worth a total of $2.5 million, with approximately $467,000 distributed annually. The grant funds a large portion of the Academic Success Center’s tutoring programs.
“We are here to help these students persist to degree completion,” says Alexsa Wanchick, an Academic Success Center program assistant. “It’s not a one-shot deal. Retention until graduation is key.”
The federally funded grant allows the Academic Success Center to provide free tutoring support services to 300 first-generation college students, students from specific income backgrounds and students with disabilities.
“The university first applied for the grant in 1978,” says Dennis Rule, an Academic Success Center program assistant. “There’s a lot of history there.”
The grant was written by Chris Tokpah; Gary Padak, the former dean of Undergraduate Studies; and Diane Munson, the former Academic Success Center director.
“It is very competitive out there. There are only a certain number of universities who are awarded this grant,” says Wanchick.
