Students have numerous tutoring options.

Check out what's new at the Academic Success Center. To assist students in their quest for success, the Academic Success Center has revamped its website, allowing for a more user-friendly search experience. Students can now access various tutoring options by simply clicking on a subject area. If students cannot find what they are looking for through the Academic Success Center, they can simply click on a Tutor Matching Service link, where they can search for a tutor.

The Academic Success Center offers a number of free services with convenient locations and hours that can greatly impact students' academic success. The key is for students to use these services early and often. While some services at the Academic Success Center are reserved for students who meet limited criteria, the majority of the services are open to all students.

Free tutoring is available for more than 50 courses in accounting, economics, foreign language, marketing, math, science, writing and social science. Beginning Jan. 18, all students can receive academic help through supplemental instruction. Drop-in tutoring began the first week of classes.

Supplemental Instruction is a peer-facilitated, group tutoring option designed to assist students in large high-risk courses (those that have a grade of D and/or F, and withdrawal rate of approximately 30 percent.) The main difference between supplemental instruction and drop-in tutoring is the peer facilitator for supplemental instruction attends the class with the student they tutor so that they can lead review sessions specific to the instructor's lecture.

The Academic Success Center was awarded a Federal TRiO grant, so eligible students can receive free scheduled tutoring services. To find out if they are eligible for scheduled tutoring, students should complete the Tutoring Application and follow three easy steps that can be found on the Academic Success website.

Locations for tutoring include the Library, residence halls and the Schwartz Center. Supplemental instruction support may meet in any academic building. For students who live away from campus or prefer tutoring to come to them, free online tutoring is also available in science, math, writing and accounting.

If students can't find the academic support they need through the Academic Success Center, they can check out the new Tutor Matching Service (TMS). TMS is a privately owned company that Kent State has partnered with to expand the available tutoring services. TMS works through Facebook and allows the student to set up a private tutoring session and pay online. Students can schedule an appointment for any time of the day and meet with their tutor face-to-face for assistance. This allows students to choose a tutor who meets their needs.

The best part of the service is that student satisfaction is 100 percent guaranteed. If a student is unhappy with the tutoring they received, TMS will refund that student's full payment. To assist students in accessing these tutoring services, Kent State will subsidize $5 of any Kent State certified tutor's hourly rate. Interested students can sign up through TMS to become a tutor.
