Kent International Festival Brings Culture to Downtown Kent

The Kent International Festival kicks off from 1 to 10 p.m.
on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Downtown Kent will come to life with colorful outfits, exotic sights, enticing aromas, foreign dancers and singers when the Kent International Festival kicks off from 1 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Hosts Heather Malarcik of Main Street Kent and Genia “G” Kollie of Kent State HOME markets anticipate a great turnout for the planned festivities.
“It is a celebration of our international students and community,” Kollie says. “We host many events that not only highlight the diversity of the city and university but provide an outlet of inclusion.”
Kent State HOME Markets is a downtown shop located in Acorn Alley that has a variety of cultural foods and various novelty items for students looking for a taste of their homelands.
Event organizers have booked at least 30 booths that will include karate masters, Salsa dancing, Chinese dragon dancers, African drummers, food, beverages and much more. As attendees arrive at the event, they will be presented with a passport to take “around the world.” At each booth, participants will be able to learn more about the culture and deepen the experience with games, activities, performances and samples.
Community members of all ages are encouraged to dress up and represent their own cultures and heritages, as well as personally participate in events and various activities.
