WKSU-FM staffers making the broadcast happen

WKSU-FM's recent spring fund drive well surpassed its original goal by raising $518,000. More than 3,000 pledges were made during the 10-day on-air campaign with calls continuing to come in to the radio station after the drive ended. As a nonprofit public radio station, WKSU-FM relies on donations from listeners and community sponsors for the majority of its operating budget. Callers were very generous, with most giving far above WKSU-FM's basic member level of $60 annually.

WKSU-FM Executive Director Al Bartholet says, "Many of those calling to make a pledge had never done so before. Connecting with these new members is vital to WKSU-FM's future, and we are grateful for their contributions."

Concerns over threats to state and federal funding for public broadcasting may have played a role in the spring fund drive's total. Bartholet continues, "Although WKSU-FM doesn't receive a large piece of its budget from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, it has allowed the station to expand into more of our region. During the drive, we were able to communicate the message to listeners – the people who use the service we provide – that we need their help to preserve high-quality radio programming."

Iris Harvey, Kent State University vice president for university relations, adds, "Congratulations to WKSU-FM for a successful fund drive! The station is a vital resource that helps Kent State University better serve Northeast Ohio."
