WKSU-FM's Vivian Goodman Reports on The Cleveland Orchestra in Asia

The Cleveland Orchestra is packing its bags, ready to bring its music to Japan and South Korea. WKSU-FM Reporter-Producer Vivian Goodman is loading up her recording equipment and traveling along with the orchestra from Nov. 14 through 22 in order to send home stories about one of Northeast Ohio's most-beloved institutions.

Her reports are scheduled to debut during Here and Now with repeat airings in WKSU-FM's local broadcasts of National Public Radio's All Things Considered. Stories will be posted on a special page at WKSU.org, along with photos and blog posts detailing her journey.

Goodman has covered the orchestra on two of its European tours but this is her, and WKSU-FM's, first time reporting from an Asian tour. Franz Welser-Most and The Cleveland Orchestra welcome guest pianist Mitsuko Uchida in a program that includes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, and Uchida will play Mozart concerti that she has performed and recorded with the group, guest conducting from the piano. Works by Bruckner, Takemitsu and Debussy will also be featured. Goodman will join the orchestra during its Suntory Hall Residency in Tokyo, Japan, and continue to Goyang and Seoul, Korea.

Save the Date for the Ninth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Jan. 27

Kent State's annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will take place Jan. 27, and features special guest Kweisi Mfume.

Mark your 2011 calendars now and plan to join students and members of the staff, faculty and the Kent community from 1-4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Kent Student Center for the ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The event will focus around the theme Empowering the Individual, Strengthening the Community.

Kweisi Mfume, nationally respected diversity advocate, TV and radio commentator and former president of the NAACP, will present the keynote speech. Other activities will include musical and dance performances, poetry readings, historical monologues and a video montage.

In the weeks ahead, watch e-Inside for more details and information about the ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, which is free and open to the public.

United Way Funds Life-Saving Services in Our Community Every Day

In February 2009, Theresa trained in American Red Cross CPR and helped save the life of her very good friend Mary. Theresa and Mary were having lunch when Mary began choking on her chicken sandwich. Mary fell to the floor unable to speak or breathe.  Theresa directed another restaurant patron to call 911 as she began giving Mary abdominal thrusts in an attempt to dislodge the food.

After several abdominal thrusts, Theresa performed a finger sweep and successfully removed the piece of food from Mary's throat. When paramedics arrived, Mary was conscious and able to breathe. Without a doubt, the skills learned in the American Red Cross Health and Safety Services course and used by Theresa contributed to saving Mary's life.

The American Red Cross could not provide this life-saving training without support from the United Way.

The United Way is a nonprofit agency that supports local organizations that work with those trying to realize their personal potential. A gift to the United Way of whatever size will be leveraged with other gifts to fund agencies in our campus communities or your local community.

Kronos Upgrade Completed

The Kronos timekeeping system upgrade from version 5.1 to 6.1 has been completed. 

Employees who use Kronos to record their time will not notice any significant changes.  They will however need to select the "Hourly Employees" link after logging in and before arriving at the timestamp.  In addition to using a separate "Supervisor" link, supervisors will approve timecards instead of using signoff.   This will be done in the same manner as in version 5.1, but will allow more than one supervisor to approve a time card for employees who have more than one job.

The new version of Kronos has a slightly different look, but the same features as the previous version.  Items that were previously located along the left side of the screen are now in tabs across the top with drop down menus.  A sample document showing the changes is available on the Payroll website. 

The document can be accessed by selecting Kronos at http://www.kent.edu/about/administration/business/business/payroll/index.cfm.   From that page, select the Kronos tab to view the sample document.
