President Lefton Reschedules Photowalk for Friday, Oct. 12
Kent State President Lester A. Lefton has rescheduled last week’s photowalk, which was adversely affected by an early morning downpour. He invites all members of the university family who share his interest in photography to join him this Friday, Oct. 12, for a photowalk. Photowalks are walks that start at a designated site and offer photographers of all skill levels an opportunity to venture out together to take pictures of interest and to share tips and experiences. Participants should gather at 7:15 a.m. on the “K” in Risman Plaza. For the next hour or so, you can join the president in taking shots of the surrounding area. If it rains again, he will reschedule the informal event.

Kent State’s College of Nursing Honored for Innovations in Education
Kent State University’s College of Nursing has been selected as a recipient of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Award. The awards program recognizes the outstanding work of AACN member schools to re-envision traditional models for nursing education and lead programmatic change.
The AACN Innovations awards, including a monetary prize of $1,000, are given annually in four institutional categories. Kent State has been selected to receive the 2012 award in the Public School without an Academic Health Center category.
“Given the complex work they do, nurses’ need to take care of themselves through self-care activities cannot be overemphasized,” says Laura Dzurec, dean of Kent State’s College of Nursing. “We hope to see every U.S. nursing program adopt the strategies that we are emphasizing through our Care for the Caregiver program, and we expect that’s exactly what might happen.”
The award will be presented on Oct. 29 at the AACN fall meeting in Washington, D.C.
“The selection process was very competitive, so you and your faculty are to be highly commended,” says AACN President Jane Kirschling in a congratulatory letter sent to Dzurec.
As a center for nursing research and education, Kent State’s College of Nursing is committed to advancing and applying nursing knowledge through excellence in undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs; nursing education that addresses a changing society; promotion of health; and enhancement of the nursing profession.

Wick Writing Club Youth Opens Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards
Isabella Rodriguez, a third-grader at Walls Elementary in Kent and a member of Kent State University’s Wick Poetry Center Writing Club, was a featured artist for the 77th Annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards. The young poet was featured to read her poem “Home” at the event, which was held in Cleveland on Sept. 13.
The Anisfield-Wolf Book Committee and its coordinator, Mary Louise Hahn, chose Rodriguez’s work from several other poets in her age group.
Rodriguez and her poem were a part of the 2012 Traveling Stanzas, a project of Kent State’s Glyphix Design Studio and the Wick Poetry Center. As part of Wick’s writing club, Rodriguez is one of the dozens of students between second and 12th grade that spend one day a week, for eight weeks, during the summer writing poetry at the Wick Poetry Center.
The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards are prizes given to authors who write works of literature that contribute to the understanding of racism and diversity of human cultures. Rodriguez’s reading was the start of this year’s event. Following the ceremony, she had the honor of meeting former United States Poet Laureate Rita Dove, as well as other members of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards Jury.

From the Kent State Connects Blog
Bob Burford, marketing/external relations coordinator with University Communications and Marketing, and weekend announcer at WKSU, continues sharing experiences from his weight loss journey. In his third post on the Kent State Connects blog, Burford writes:
Getting My Mind Right
“Obesity is all over the news these days. It seems like every week there’s a new study issued, modified dietary guidelines are put forth and more dire statistics are released. As I write this, a new report indicates that half of Americans may be obese by 2030. How can you blame people for getting obesity fatigue?”

Effie Tsengas, communications and marketing director for the College of the Arts, writes about the effects of live music:
Live Music Feeds the Soul
“Recently, while visiting my dad at Menorah Park, a rehabilitation facility in Beachwood, he and I were treated to a performance by the Hillcrest Concert Band. As we sat and listened to the 50-some volunteer musicians, I was so thankful and appreciative and amazed at the talents these people shared with the residents. I was so moved that I shed a few tears.”
