Annual Cornhole Tournament Tosses in Hefty Sum for United Way Campaign

Twenty-eight cleverly named teams faced off in the second annual Kent State-United Way Cornhole Tournament, sponsored by the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.  Teams were sponsored by departments or by student organizations throughout the university - even the Office of the President assembled two teams.  A total of $1,400 was raised for United Way.

The M.A.C.C Champions, with the United Way contribution
First place went to the fiercely competitive M.A.C.C. Champions team, sponsored by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and second place went to Kent State's Leaders sponsored by the student organization The National Society for Leadership and Success. Both teams won trophies for their efforts. The members of the M.A.C.C. Champions each were awarded gift certificates to the Kent State Bookstore.

The tournament was made possible with the assistance of the Office of the Provost, the Department of Recreational Services and ABC Rental.  Those supporters provided the space for the competition, the tournament shirts, food and beverages and the cornhole sets.

Congratulations and thanks go to all those who tossed beanbags for United Way:

Winter Holiday Schedule Reminder

Kent State once again will implement a holiday schedule in December. The holiday schedule will run from the first shift on Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, through Jan. 1, 2011. During that time all nonessential operations will be closed at all Kent State campuses. Regular university operations will resume with the start of the first shift on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011.

This year the Christmas and New Year's holidays fall on a Saturday. Classified and unclassified employees will receive paid leave for three days, Dec. 28, 29 and 30. The paid leave is in addition to the paid holidays of Dec. 24, 27 and Dec. 31.

The holiday schedule applies to classified and unclassified employees who normally accrue vacation throughout the year. The group of employees not eligible for the paid leave includes student employees, classified temporary staff, temporary agency staff, unclassified nine- and 10-month term appointments, short-term unclassified assignments and employees in a lay-off status. The holiday schedule does not apply to faculty, whether they are on a nine- or 12-month contract.

More information, including a list of departments and their status during the holiday schedule, will be available in early December. Information on leave reporting will also be made available at that time.

Women's Center Scholarship Reception to Honor Mentors, Mothers and Muses

Now is time to nominate your colleagues who have acted as a mother, mentor or muse, so that they may be recognized at the Women's Center Annual Scholarship Fundraising Reception on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 from 5 - 7:30 p.m.

Faculty, staff and students can nominate a woman of excellence in any of the three roles: mother, mentor or muse.  A mother is a woman who has helped with academic endeavors and who serves as a nurturing individual, a mentor is a woman who serves as a trusted role model and a muse is a woman who inspires creativity and academic passion in others.

Nominations will be accepted until Dec. 31. To nominate a mother, mentor or muse, complete the nomination form found at www.kent.edu/womenscenter.
