Call for Proposals: University Teaching Council Summer Teaching Development Grant

In support of excellence in education at Kent State University, the University Teaching Council calls for proposals to the Summer Teaching Development Grant  program. The program is intended to enhance student learning by engaging faculty to significantly improve teaching methods, develop curricula or create innovative course materials. The University Teaching Council seeks innovative proposals that address the university, college or departmental missions, including, but not limited to, proposals that address the LERs/Kent Core, distance learning, interdisciplinary courses and experiential learning. Proposals must address the Kent State Philosophy on Education that promotes knowledge, insight, engagement and responsibility. Preference will be given to projects that provide the greatest learning benefits to students.
 
Faculty may submit for Summer Teaching Development Grants in two amounts: $3,250 for a five-week period and $6,500 for a 10-week period. In addition, collaborative proposals may split a $6,500 award. The grants serve as faculty salary, and recipients must agree not to accept any other teaching projects for the duration of the grant.
 
The grants are intended to fund the total cost of the proposed project. In cases of exceptional expense, the University Teaching Council may consider additional funds under the Teaching Conference or the Teaching Development Grants.

Nominate a Colleague for the 2011 Distinguished Scholar Award

The University Research Council is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Distinguished Scholar Award.

In conjunction with the annual Celebration of Scholarship, the University Research Council sponsors a program of annual awards to three distinguished scholars for outstanding research and/or creative activities at Kent State University. The cash award is $1,500, and nominations are made by peers. Awardees are selected by a committee of faculty members from related disciplines and endorsed by the full council.

To be eligible, a faculty member must be nominated. Self-nominations are acceptable. Submit the nomination no later than Feb. 15, 2011.  After all the nominations are received, the University Research Council will contact each nominee individually for detailed information and additional material to support their nomination. The awards will be presented at the Distinguished Scholar Award ceremony, which will take place during the annual Celebration of Scholarship event on April 15, 2011.

Only tenured/tenure-track and emeriti faculty at Kent State may nominate someone for a Distinguished Scholar Award. Individuals may nominate only one candidate per year.

Except in unusual circumstances, only full professors who have been at Kent State for a full five years are eligible to receive a Distinguished Scholar Award. In order to receive the award, nominees who have been at Kent State for less than 10 years must demonstrate a record of sustained scholarship and/or creative activity since coming to Kent State.

An individual may only receive one Distinguished Scholar Award. Finalists from the previous year will be asked if they wish to be considered again for the award. Therefore, it is not necessary to nominate an individual who received a nomination in the previous year.

The 2010 Distinguished Scholar Award recipients are Dr. John Dunlosky, Department of Psychology; Dr. Robert Flexer, School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences, and Dr. Phil Rumrill, also from the School  of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences.

What's Up Highlights Things to do at Kent State

The Center for Student Involvement recently transitioned its weekly What's Happening e-newsletter into a new website format titled What's Up. The new format was created in an effort to increase the availability of the Center for Student Involvement's one-stop shop of great information for everyone including current students, faculty, staff, and prospective students and their families. The new Web format allows users to access information on all of the great things Kent State has to offer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Now, the Center for Student Involvement staff can post new information as it rolls in instead of only once per week.

The former What's Happening e-newsletter grew out of a need to reduce the amount of "digging" that students had to do in order to find an event, activity or student organization to get involved with and make the most out of their college experience. Any student group, department or external entity can request that their information be included in the What's Up listing.
