Provost Todd Diacon is the featured speaker at the fall 2012
Bowman Breakfast event on Oct. 3. Diacon's talk is titled
"Why I Chose (and Love) Kent State."
The fall 2012 Bowman Breakfast will be held at Kent State University in the Kent Student Center Ballroom on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Doors open at 7 a.m., breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the program to follow at 8 a.m.
The cost is $9 per person at the door, payable by cash or check. No invoicing is available for this event, and payment at the door is required.
The featured speaker is Kent State Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Todd Diacon. Provost Diacon’s talk is titled “Why I Chose (and Love) Kent State.”

Get Ready to Celebrate Homecoming 2012
Kent State alumni join in celebrating Homecoming.
Homecoming 2012, a day full of activities, will take place
on Oct. 20.
Homecoming 2012 will be here in less than four weeks! Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20, a day full of fun activities has been planned for faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community.
Highlights of the day include the annual Bowman Cup 5K Race, the Hospitality Tent at the Williamson Alumni Center, the Homecoming parade and Kiss on the K. Several new homecoming events will make their debut this year, including a mentalist show by Christopher Carter, Kent City tours on Lolly the Trolley and an art auction of the works of Kent State alumni, Tom Batiuk, ’69, and Chuck Ayers, ’71. The day concludes as the Golden Flashes take on the Western Michigan Broncos with kick-off at 3:30 p.m.
Many other Homecoming events are being held throughout the week including a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 18, for the new Student Green in front of the Risman Plaza. Department of Public Safety Will Initiate Fire Evacuation Drills on Sept. 27
On Thursday, Sept. 27 at 11:10 a.m. and at 5:50 p.m., the Department of Public Safety will test the emergency notification system on the Kent Campus.
The purpose of this annual exercise is to familiarize students and employees with building evacuations and precautions to be taken in event of a fire or any other type of emergency.
No actual evacuation will take place during this exercise. Instead, classroom instructors and unit supervisors are asked to review the guidelines with their respective students and employees. As always, listen to the message and follow the instructions given.

2012 National Depression Screening Day
Kent State students, facutly and staff are
invited to National Depression Screening
Day on Oct. 11 at the Kent Student Center.
Come to National Depression Screening Day (NDSD) on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is being held on the 2nd floor of the Kent Student Center and is open to all students, faculty and staff, as well as the larger Kent community.
As part of the free screening, participants have the opportunity to complete a questionnaire, which screens for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, and to talk to a clinician in the mental health field to review their results and discuss any concerns they may have. If necessary, appropriate referrals can be made, and participants can also pick up information on depression and other mental health issues for themselves or for someone they may be concerned about.
Students can also attend the event at Kent State University at on the Stark at the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation Counseling Center located on the lower level of the Campus Center between noon and 4 p.m.
Students unable to attend the in-person screening event may consider accessing an anonymous online screening: www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/kent.
National Depression Screening Day is being co-sponsored by Psychological Services, University Health Services and Active Minds @ Kent State University. Food and other giveaways will be available. All are invited to participate.

Kent State Women’s Center Offers Mammogram Screenings
Kent State University’s Women’s Center will offer mammogram screenings to qualified Kent State employees, spouses and students on Oct. 9, 10 and 11. Mammograms take approximately 12 minutes and will be conveniently provided in Tiffany Breast Care’s mobile mammography unit. The van will be located on the Kent Campus in front of the Women’s Center. Participants’ health insurance will be billed or participants may choose to self-pay.
Following your mammogram, the Women's Center will provide a 10-minute chair massage for stress reduction and relaxation. The massage will be provided by Kristin Driscoll, licensed massotherapist and owner of Songs of the Sidhe Day Spa in Kent. Please stop by the Women’s Center following your mammogram for a gift bag and massage.
For additional information or to register, call the Women's Center at 330-672-9230, Monday through Friday, from 9-4 p.m. If you are unable to reach the staff at the Women’s Center, please call back at another time. Registration is required by Oct. 1.

TLC Springwater Serves Kent State's Eight-Campus System
Kent State staff and students enjoy bottled water provided
by TLC Springwater of Ohio.
TLC Springwater of Ohio (TLC), a minority-owned distributor of drinking water products and services, has been awarded the contract to service Kent State University’s eight-campus system. The custom label bottled water product will be used at catered events, certain promotional activities and special events.
Kent State University’s Supplier Diversity program is dedicated to developing strong relationships with minority- and women-owned businesses. These companies offer value and diversity that is important in an organization’s network of suppliers. Doing business with minority-owned firms also promotes economic inclusion that helps to build strong regions across the country.
“Faculty and students are immensely diverse, so the suppliers should be as well,” says Kazell Pugh, president of TLC Springwater. “Minority-owned companies are great sources of jobs and opportunities for everyone everywhere.”
TLC is certified with the state of Ohio, Cuyahoga County and the city of Cleveland as a minority-owned company. Minority certification is important to ensure that a company is truly owned and operated by a minority. Kent State also has state of Ohio supplier diversity goals, and certified companies are the only ones recognized for those goals.

Kent State University Independent Films Script Competition
Kent State University Independent Films is looking for an outstanding script for a film this summer. The competition is open to any Kent State student.
We are looking for full-length feature scripts in the genres of psychological thriller, suspense or mystery. Good examples to think about would be any Hitchcock films, “Memento,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Silence of the Lambs,” “Signs,” “Paranormal Activity,” “Chronicle,” “The Cabin in the Woods,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” etc.
Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer but have a great idea, your submissions are welcome. Your idea could be the next film.
Email PDF copy to kentstatefilms@gmail.com (Put” KSU Films Script Competition 2012” in the subject line). Hard copy submissions can be dropped off outside the door of the film office. The office is located inside the media lab (room 125) in Franklin Hall. Include your contact information with your submission.
All submissions must be received by Nov. 2 in order to be considered. An acknowledgement email will be sent on receipt of your submission.
