Bowl Bound: Cheer On Your Golden Flashes Football Team

The Kent State Golden Flashes football team claimed
the program’s first MAC East Division title and is now
bound for a bowl game on Jan. 6.

Following the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship game held this past Friday in Detroit, the Kent State University football team is now bound for a bowl game. For information about the game, as well as ticket and travel packages, visit www.kentstatesports.com.

The Kent State Golden Flashes football team claimed the program’s first MAC East Division title with a perfect 8-0 record and an 11-1 overall mark. Kent State will be playing in its third bowl game in program history. Kent State’s first bowl appearance was in 1954, and the last one was in 1972. The 40-year bowl drought is the second longest in the nation.

In addition to a perfect conference record, Kent State head football coach Darrell Hazell was named MAC Coach of the Year and is a semifinalist for National Coach of the Year. Dri Archer was named MAC Special Teams Player of the Year and broke Kent State’s single-season record for touchdowns. Nine Golden Flashes earned All-MAC honors, including three on the first team. Tackle Brian Winters became the second player in program history to get selected to play in the Senior Bowl.

Nominate a Kent State Faculty Member for the 2013 Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award by Jan. 20

You are invited to nominate a Kent State University faculty member for the 2013 Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award, formerly known as the Distinguished Scholar Award.  Sponsored by the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs and the University Research Council, this award is intended to honor Kent State’s finest outstanding researchers and scholars. The awardees will be selected based on the quality of research and scholarship and the impact on society. 

Who can be nominated? 
Any Kent State faculty member can be nominated, except those who have previously received either the Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award or the Distinguished Scholar Award.

Who can nominate? 
Any member of the Kent State community, including faculty, emeriti, staff, students and alumni can nominate a faculty member for the award.  To nominate someone, you must submit a letter outlining the specific research and/or scholarly achievements of the nominee. Please send an email to research@kent.edu and attach your letter of support.

Nomination Deadline: Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at 11:59 p.m.

Finalists will be announced on the Kent State homepage on March 4.

Final Grading of Full Term, Third Five Weeks (F3), Second Half of Semester (H2) and Second Seven Weeks (W2) Fall 2012

Online final grading for Fall 2012 courses meeting in Full Term (1: 8/27/2012 – 12/9/2012), Third Five Weeks (F3: 11/5/2012 – 12/9/2012), Second Half of Semester (H2: 10/18/2012 – 12/9/2012) or Second Seven Weeks (W2: 10/21/2012 – 12/8/2012) parts of term, begins Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, via FlashFAST. Grading is available now also for any fall 2012 course section that was flexibly scheduled. The deadline for grading submission is midnight on Tuesday, Dec 18, 2012.

FlashFAST is accessible from any Internet-capable computer that has the cookies function enabled. To access FlashFAST, log in to FlashLine at http://flashline.kent.edu and click the Faculty and Advisor Tools tab. The link to your grade roster(s) is located in the Faculty and Advisor Toolbox, under the Submit Grades heading.

Grades Processing Tips and FAQ may be found on the University Registrar's website at www.kent.edu/registrar/facstaff/facresc.cfm. Any faculty member needing personalized instruction on submitting their grades via FlashFAST should contact their campus Registrar's Office during normal business hours for assistance.

Also, as a helpful tip, it is recommended that you clean out your cookie and cache files regularly to help your computer run faster, and to potentially restore and/or improve your access to FlashFAST and/or FlashLine by improving your connection to the server. Webinar on Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals

Significant changes are coming soon to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) adopted the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS includes criteria for the classification of health, physical and environmental hazards, as well as specifying what information should be included on labels of hazardous chemicals and safety data sheets.

ChemWatch will present two webinars to explain how these changes will affect hazard communications. ChemWatch is recognized globally as the most comprehensive MSDS Management and Chemicals Management repository, with over 13 million MSDS available.

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Inform Your Female Students About the Women’s Center Foundation Scholarship

The Women's Center at Kent State University provides
Kent State female students with scholarships. Nineteen
students so far have benefited from the scholarship
program. 

The Women's Center at Kent State University has been a motivating force toward the advancement of women in higher education. An integral part of the center’s effort is to empower women with financial assistance in obtaining a college degree.

The Women’s Center endowed scholarship fund, established in 2003, enables the center to provide two Kent State female students with a $500 scholarship. To date, 19 women have received scholarships.

Applications will be accepted for the 2013-2014 school year through Monday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

• Applicants must be a female sophomore, junior or senior enrolled at Kent State University as a full-time student during the award period
• Strong academic performance
• Demonstrated contribution to social causes related to diversity and/or women’s issues
• Active involvement in campus and/or community groups and organizations (including holding positions and/or coordinating responsibilities)
• Unique life circumstance/challenges, such as financial need or overcoming obstacles

New Minor in Nonprofit Studies Provides Students With Skills for the Nonprofit Sector

The Human Development and Family Studies Program at Kent State University now offers a new minor in nonprofit studies. The nonprofit studies minor will greatly enhance a student’s employability within the nonprofit sector.

Nonprofit organizations provide valuable services at the local, state, national and international levels. Kathy Bergh, director of the nonprofit studies program, encourages students to add the minor to their course of study.

“The minor in nonprofit studies will enhance the employability of students in many different majors,” Bergh says. “These unique organizations are run differently than for-profit businesses; therefore, they require a distinctive skill set. The nonprofit field is growing and needs well-trained employees who are prepared to meet their needs.”

The program is open to all Kent State students and only requires 21-22 credit hours. Many of the classes are available online to easily fit into busy schedules. Currently, students in this minor come from a variety of majors, including business, education, health sciences, general studies, gerontology, political science, psychology, sociology and more.
