Kent State Names Interim Dean of College of Business Administration

Kathryn Wilson
Dr. Kathryn S. Wilson, economics professor
at Kent State University, has been named
interim dean of the university’s College of
Business Administration.

Dr. Kathryn S. Wilson, economics professor at Kent State University, has been named interim dean of the university’s College of Business Administration. The announcement was made by Robert G. Frank, Kent State’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

Wilson’s appointment is effective Oct. 1 for approximately one year or until a permanent dean is in place.

As interim dean, Wilson will have responsibility for development and supervision of the program budget, recommendations regarding the appointment and retention of all staff, recommending and implementing program and course offerings, establishing course assignments and workloads, assisting in the administration of the university’s personnel and affirmative action policies and enforcing all university regulations, policies and procedures. Wilson replaces Robert “Yank” Heisler, who is retiring as dean of the College of Business Administration, a position he held since 2008.

“We are fortunate to have the strong leadership of Dr. Wilson at this time,” Frank says. “I know that she will inspire confidence, cooperation and respect in her colleagues, and will continue the growth and excellence of the college.”

Wilson, who received her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin, has been a faculty member at Kent State since 1996. Her research focuses on issues related to poverty and inequality, with publications on social mobility, educational attainment, school funding, disability and teen pregnancy.

Wilson has won a number of teaching awards and takes great joy in teaching economics to undergraduates and graduate students. Her previous administrative experience includes serving as interim chair of the Department of Economics during the 2007-08 academic year and interim associate dean of the college from 2008-09.

Wilson resides in Kent.

New University Initiative Focuses on Safety

College campuses across the nation are facing a serious problem and unfortunately, the numbers do not lie.  Nationally, women have a one–in-six statistical probability of being sexually assaulted and college women are four times as likely to be sexually assaulted as are other women.  Although women are most often the victims, one in six men is sexually assaulted during his lifetime.

Kent State University is proud to announce a new safety initiative – the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).  The SART was created to educate students about personal safety and violence prevention, to empower them to build healthier relationships, and to be responsive to students in need. The SART is a comprehensive, collaborative and victim-centered response to sexual assault, which includes prevention, education and response/recovery components.  The mission is to educate the university community about sexual assault, to provide anti-violence programming and coordinate support services and to encourage all community members to speak out when witnessing violence. The SART consists of administrators from a broad spectrum of Kent State departments and organizations.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to visit the newly developed website, www.kent.edu/SART where numerous links to campus and local resources, online resources, and national resources can be found.  Information and support is also available by calling 330-672-8016.

This fall, sexual assault and sexual misconduct are the focus of two upcoming events.  All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.  Proof of attendance at both events will be made available to students for those faculty interested in issuing extra credit. For education and prevention programming for your class or organization, please contact Scott Dotterer at 330-672-8266.

No – Yes with Katie Koestner
Thursday, Sept. 15
7 p.m. at the Kiva

Katie Koestner was the first survivor of date rape to speak out nationally. In No-Yes, Koestner shares her survivor story. Her emotionally-charged presentation creates an environment of understanding and helps lay the groundwork for behavioral transformation. Koestner shares her story on a level that everyone can feel, and to which everyone can relate.

Sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement, University Health Services, Women's Center and the Kent State Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).

This event is free and open to the public. Extra credit is available for those instructors interested in class attendance.

Sex Signals
Tuesday, Sept. 20

Show #1
7 - 8:30 p. m.
Bowman Room 137

Show #2
9 - 10:30 p.m.
Bowman Room 133

Sex Signals mixes improvisational comedy, education and audience interaction with provoking discussions about dating, sex and the issue of consent. The two-person play begins with an irreverent and funny look at the awkwardness of dating, with each actor representing their gender's perspective. Through a no-holds-barred approach, the show explores how social pressures, gender role stereotypes and unrealistic fantasies can make social interaction a challenge. Worse still, these factors enable some to view date rape as simple seduction and for victims of date rape to blame themselves for their own vulnerability. Although the message is a serious one, the show uses humor, and engages audiences in candid discussions about their beliefs and experiences. Seasoned educators and facilitators, the presenters strike a balance between laughing about the differences between men and women, and clearly communicating some serious messages about how we all should treat each other.

Sponsored by the Kent State Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).

This event is free and open to the public. Extra credit is available for those instructors interested in class attendance.

Who’s in Charge of Your Departmental Website?

Kent State’s University Communications and Marketing is asking all academic and nonacademic department heads to verify the person(s) who should have access to:

  1. Update your website if it is housed in CommonSpot, the university's content management system.
  2. SiteImprove, a utility that reports spelling errors and broken links on your website (we don’t think all website content editors will need this access; but that could vary from department to department)

If you have not already verified the webmaster for your department, please take a few minutes to review the Excel file at www.kent.edu/ucm/services/web/commonspot/upload/commonspot-user-account-list.xls.

The easiest way to search the file is to hit CTRL F (find), enter your department (example Justice Studies) and scan to where this 'finder' functionality takes you in the document. Be sure to click Find Next, to see all individuals associated with your department's website.

Please email webteam@kent.edu with updates including:

  1. The need to add or delete an individual(s) with access to your website and indicate the necessary changes.

Note: If you are adding someone for website access, that person should also contact University Communications and Marketing at the above email address for access instructions and a user training session. Training information can be found at http://www.kent.edu/ucm/services/web/commonspot/.
  2. The individual(s) that should receive your SiteImprove utility access. They can watch for more information on how to use this valuable tool via the CommonSpot website content editor listserv (cspotusers@listserv.kent.edu).

Questions should be directed to Lin Danes at ldanes@kent.edu.
