University Health Services Provides Flu Shot Clinics and Primary Care for Kent State Faculty and Staff

University Health Services offers convenient care services
to all part-time and full-time Kent State University faculty
and staff.

Kent State University Health Services is holding flu shot clinics for Kent State faculty and staff.  Information about flu clinic dates and locations are available at www.kent.edu/hr/benefits/flu-shot-clinics.

The flu shot is covered 100 percent for faculty, staff and dependents covered under the Kent State employee health insurance policy. Those not covered under the employee’s health insurance are welcome to receive a flu shot for $30. Additional clinics will be available to faculty and staff on all Kent State campuses.

In addition to flu shot clinics, University Health Services offers convenient care services to all part-time and full-time Kent State faculty and staff. University Health Services also accepts orders from community physicians as a convenience.

“We offer services like lab tests, X-rays or physical therapy, things their primary physician orders, they can conveniently get here,” says Dr. Angela DeJulius, director of University Health Services.

There also are new policies in place for students. This year, international students are required to have health insurance. This health insurance plan costs international students $821 for the fall semester, charged to their bursar account.

“It’s a student health insurance policy that we reviewed bids for,” DeJulius says. “And we found the most cost-effective, affordable policy we could find for the students, so I believe that it’s a good policy.”

University Health Services considered all the options for uninsured international students.

“The risk of international students being here without insurance created some problematic situations for students,” DeJulius says.

Citing the costs of surgeries and emergency room visits, DeJulius believes this newly mandated student insurance policy is important to protect international students.

Beginning this fall, there will be a spring class registration hold placed on newly enrolled students who have not submitted immunization records, says DeJulius.

“There are more and more outbreaks of measles and mumps around the country and on college campuses, so we have to take it seriously,” DeJulius stresses.

Division of Information Services Promotes Social Media Awareness with Universitywide Cybersecurity Event

special event to raise awareness about
social media security and online security
best practices on Wednesday, Oct. 14,
at the Kent Student Center Kiva.

What information can your "friends" view on Facebook? How much do your Twitter followers know about you? What personal details can someone gather by simply watching your online activity and researching your public information? You may be surprised.

In support of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, Kent State University is sponsoring a special event with cybersecurity professionals from the FBI and Chart Industries to raise awareness about social media security and online security best practices on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m. at the Kent Student Center Kiva.

"Social Security? Be Aware of What You Share!" is a public event for Kent State students, staff, faculty and community members to learn how identity theft can occur through seemingly innocent information posted online, such as birthdays, hometowns or employer information.

Jack Nichelson from Chart Industries and Robert Carson from the FBI also will inform the community of specific information that can lead to accounts being compromised, give guidance on what to do if an account is hacked, and share stories from their own professional cybersecurity experiences.

No event registration is required.

New Copyright Policy at Kent State Will Go Into Effect January 2016

At its September meeting, the Kent State University Board of Trustees approved a new copyright policy, 3342-3-10, University policy regarding the use of copyright-protected works. This policy is part of the legal requirement for institutions such as Kent State to invoke the TEACH Act, which allows instructors, within specified limits, to digitally transmit third-party-produced, copyright-protected works without previous permission of the copyright owner. The policy becomes effective with the spring semester, Jan. 19, 2016.  See the full-text of the policy here:

“It is my hope that this new policy will enable instructors to enrich teaching and learning by taking full advantage of the U.S. Copyright Law, including both the TEACH Act and Fair Use,” says Cindy Kristof, associate professor and head of copyright and document services at Kent State’s University Libraries.

The Cleveland Browns invite the Kent State University community from all eight campuses to enjoy four games during the 2015 season at First Energy Stadium for Kent State Days.

Discount tickets are available for all Kent State faculty, staff and students for the following games:

• Baltimore Ravens: Monday, Nov. 30, at 8:30 p.m.
• Cincinnati Bengals: Sunday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m.
• San Francisco 49ers: Sunday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m.
• Pittsburgh Steelers: Sunday, Jan. 3, at 1 p.m.

Congrats to the Homecoming Office Decorating Contest Winners

The Kent State University Alumni Association is happy to announce two winners of this year’s office decorating contest: the Exploratory Advising Center and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. These offices ended up with perfect scores!

Coffee and Muffins

The winning offices were surprised by staff members of the alumni association the Friday before Homecoming. Both offices received coffee and muffins, and one of the offices won the eagle trophy.

Thank you to all the offices that decorated their office spaces for Homecoming! This year, around 25 offices decked out their workspaces in blue and gold to show off their Kent State pride. All offices were judged on creativity, use of theme, use of physical space, visual appearance and appeal, and incorporation of staff.

Important Information Regarding Midterm Grading for Freshmen

Online midterm grading for freshmen in full-term fall 2015 courses begins Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, via FlashFAST. Please remember that midterm grading applies ONLY to courses that meet for the full semester. The deadline for midterm grade submission is midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015.

No midterm grade can be reported after the deadline. The Grade Change workflow cannot be used to report midterm grades after the fact, and the Office of the University Registrar will not accommodate other late submission requests.

To access FlashFAST, log in to FlashLine at http://flashline.kent.edu and click the Faculty & Advisor Tools tab. Locate the Faculty Toolbox, and select Midterm under the Submit Grades heading.

Grades Processing Tips and FAQ may be found on the Office of the University Registrar's website at www.kent.edu/registrar/faculty-grades-processing. Any faculty member needing personalized instruction on submitting their grades via FlashFAST should contact their campus Registrar's Office during normal business hours for assistance.
