New Faculty Series Starts Aug. 24

The Faculty Professional Development Center (FPDC) is delighted to help welcome our new faculty colleagues in just a few weeks. We look forward to connecting them to the great people and resources at Kent State. The official start of the New Faculty Series is Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The FPDC coordinates the New Faculty Series, with support from the Office of the Provost, and is available to assist staff and faculty in sharing resources with these new members of the university community.

Since it isn't practical to share all of the information within the first week of classes, FPDC staffers are happy to work with individual units in preparing and distributing information. There will be regular meetings throughout the fall to do this, with the purpose of providing timely and manageable chunks of information to our new colleagues.

The acclaimed exhibit "Katharine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen" at the Kent State University Museum showcases the screen legend's performance clothes, which include stage and film costumes spanning Miss Hepburn's career, as well as apparel she wore for publicity purposes. Only two weeks remain to see the acclaimed exhibit. The exhibit, which opened last October, closes on Sept. 4.

Katharine Hepburn is universally recognized among the greatest actresses of all time. She was nominated by the Motion Picture Academy a record 12 times in the best leading actress category and won four Oscars - for “Morning Glory” (1933), “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner” (1967), “The Lion in Winter” (1968), and “On Golden Pond” (1981). This record has never been equaled.

"Katharine Hepburn has had a profound impact on American popular culture and fashion, and has influenced generations of women," says Jean Druesedow, director of the Kent State Museum and curator of the exhibit.

"On screen and off, she epitomized the modern American woman – smart, independent, active, honest, feisty, and outspoken,” says Druesedow. “In terms of fashion, Katharine Hepburn blazed trails by popularizing slacks for women, wearing or adapting men's suits as women's apparel, and helping internationalize what is now called 'The American Style.'"

The museum acquired Miss Hepburn's performance clothes in 2008 from the star's estate. Before her death in 2003, she had made clear her collection of performance clothes should be given to an educational institution instead of being sold at auction. The Kent State University Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums, and is known internationally for its costume and fashion collections. The result was a perfect fit.

"Katharine Hepburn's costumes were designed or overseen by some of the greatest 20th century designers for fashion, stage and film," says Druesedow. "Valentina, Adrian, Irene, Muriel King, Cecil Beaton, Coco Chanel, Walter Plunkett, Edith Head, Patricia Zipprodt, Jane Greenwood, Noel Taylor - it's an 'A' List all the way."

Though the collections' ownership is indisputable - they were literally hanging in Katharine Hepburn's closets - the museum had to correctly identify which movie or play the garments came from since they were untagged. Movie frames, stage stills and publicity shots of Miss Hepburn helped immensely and are displayed alongside the costumes.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, the costumes are presented according to genre, with "screen" including film and television. A series of Miss Hepburn's iconic beige trousers, linen vests and tailored jackets will be placed as guideposts through the exhibit.

Late Night @ the Library Set for Aug. 26

Kent State University Libraries invites new freshmen and all students, families and friends to an evening of fun at Late Night @ the Library on Friday, Aug. 26, from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m.

Enjoy free pizza, drinks and popcorn. Listen to music provided by Black Squirrel Radio DJs. Challenge friends to a classic board game or go high-tech and participate in Wii games, including a Bowling Challenge, Rock Band or Just Dance.

“Last year’s event attracted more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff and friends,” says Diane Sperko, director of communications and marketing for University Libraries. “Students really had fun last year, and we expect a great turnout again.”

It’s also a chance to meet your friendly neighborhood librarians and the real Black Squirrel.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, in downtown Cleveland. Kent State University faculty and staff are invited to join the university team and help this important cause.

The team “KSU Health Services-Student Accessibility Services-Women’s Center” has recently been registered online. If you would like to join the team and receive your race T-shirt and packet in the mail, you can do so by registering online by midnight on Monday, Aug. 22. Online registration will continue Aug. 23 through Sept. 5, but participants who register after Aug. 22 will need to pick up their race T-shirts and packets at one of the registration sites noted on the website during designated dates and times.

HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE:

• Go to www.komenneohio.org and click on “Komen Race for the Cure”
• On the left side of the page, select “Register”
• On the right side of the page, select “Join a Team”
• To find our team, go to “Team Name” and type in the first few letters of our team name - KSU
• Go to” Team Division” and scroll down to “School/University/College”
• Click on “Search for a Team”
• You will see our team’s full name highlighted in blue; click on our team name
• Now you can click on “Join Team”
• At this point, you should be at the page that identifies “Participation Options”
• Select your option and follow the prompts for online registration
• Once registered, you can also recruit others to join our team and/or encourage family and friends to donate to your online page
