June 17 is Kent State Day with the Akron Aeros; Tickets Only $7

"Kent State Day at Canal Park" will be held on Friday,
June 17.

Kent State University is proud to partner with the Akron Aeros for “Kent State Day at Canal Park” on Friday, June 17, as part of the Kent State Community Caravan this summer.

Kent State Athletics will be featured as the Akron Aeros take on the Portland Sea Dogs at 7:05 p.m. There also will be postgame fireworks.

Come early to watch Kent State head football coach Darrell Hazell and head men’s basketball coach Rob Senderoff throw out the ceremonial first pitches. You also be able to meet and get autographs from the coaches and senior players from both football and basketball teams.

Kent State University head coaches and administrators will be appearing at various Giant Eagle locations throughout the summer. Meet head football coach Darrell Hazell and head men’s basketball coach Rob Senderoff as well as other Kent State Golden Flashes staff members at the Kent State Athletics Community Caravan.

Fans can pick up a hot dog and Coke for just $1, with all proceeds benefitting Akron Children’s Hospital. In addition, there will be free Kent State cookies, interactive games and the opportunity to get autographs.

Kent State’s Porthouse Theatre Presents Sensational Chicago!

is preparing for a razzle-dazzle 2011 season.

Porthouse Theatre, Kent State University’s outdoor summer theatre located on the grounds of Blossom Music Center, is preparing for a razzle-dazzle 2011 season. The professional theatre, celebrating its 43rd year, opens the season with the Broadway sensation Chicago, with book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins.

The show will be directed by Porthouse Theatre’s Artistic Director Terri Kent. Kent is a professor of theatre at Kent State and also serves as director of the musical theatre program for the university’s School of Theatre and Dance. Chicago will run June 16 - 18, June 21 - 25, June 28 - 30 and July 1 and 2 at 8 p.m.; and June 19 and 26 at 2 p.m.

The second production of the season is The Sunshine Boys by Neil Simon, which runs July 7- 9, July 12 - 16 and July 19 - 23 at 8 p.m.; and July 10 and July 17 at 2 p.m. The Porthouse Theatre season closes with the iconic musical Hello, Dolly! Performances are July 28 - 30, Aug. 2 - 6 and Aug. 9 - 14 at 8 p.m.; and July 31, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14 at 2 p.m.

Subscriptions and single tickets are currently on sale. Prices for Tuesday through Friday evening performances are $60 for adults and $51 for seniors; Saturday nights are $66 for adults and seniors; and Sunday matinees are $57 for adults and $51 for seniors. Gift subscriptions are also available. Special rates are available for students and groups of 20 or more.

United Way 5K Race Steps Off On July 2

Mark your calendars for the Ametek Tree City 5K for United Way on Saturday, July 2.

The Tree City Race course is a scenic point-to-point course, which will run from Dix Stadium through the Kent Campus, and finish near downtown Kent by the DuBois bookstore.

Schedule of Events
5:30 p.m. - Shuttles begin running from finish area DuBois bookstore in Kent to start at Dix Stadium
6:00 – 5:45 p.m. Registration and check-in (rain or shine)
7:00 p.m. - 5K Race starts (no strollers permitted in race)
8:00 p.m. - Course closes

The pre-registration fee is $18; registration on the day of the race is $23. For more information and to register, visit www.treecityrace.com.

The race is being held in conjunction with the 2011 Kent Heritage Festival, the city of Kent’s celebration of its heritage and America’s independence. This annual daylong celebration features the Jeff Graham Memorial Fireworks, Kent Historic Train Rides, Ducks Over the Falls, live music and entertainment on three stages, a children’s play area and more than 100 food and craft booths and local displays.

The United Way of Portage County funds 17 nonprofit agencies locally that help adults, children and families in crisis and promote health and wellness initiatives in the community. The United Way of Portage County also operates the 2-1-1 call center, which connects individuals to more than 800 local community services.
