University Libraries’ Stress-Free Zone Returns Dec. 9 and 10

Stress-Free Zone event. The Stress-Free Zone returns
Dec. 9 and 10.

Kent State University Libraries will hold its Stress-Free Zone event on Monday, Dec. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 3-5 p.m. each day on the first floor of the University Library. The Stress-Free Zone offers the opportunity for a study break for students and an avenue to reduce stress for faculty and staff members as the fall semester comes to an end.

Pet therapy dogs will return this year to help ease the stress of finals week. There will be free popcorn and beverages for all.

“For several weeks now, Kent State students, faculty and staff have been asking if we’ll bring Dogs on Campus back again this year,” says Karen Hillman, director of marketing communications and public relations for University Libraries. “Last year, the library lobby was filled with people enjoying refreshments and waiting for a chance to pet the dogs. You can’t help but smile when you see their tails wagging.”

Recommend Your Colleague to Be Honored as a Women’s Center “Mother, Mentor or Muse” By Dec. 20

“Mothers, Mentors and Muses” honorees

"Mothers, Mentors and Muses” is the Women’s Center’s signature event recognizing Kent State University female faculty or staff members who have made a significant difference in the life of a student or colleague. More than 150 women across the university have received this honor.

You are invited to submit* the name and a descriptive statement of a Kent State woman for the 2014 “Mothers, Mentors and Muses” event.

This award is intended to honor women of Kent State who have served in any of three roles:

• Mother – one who has helped “birth” ideas, thoughts and academic endeavors in others, or who serves as a nurturing individual to others.
• Mentor – one who serves as a trusted counselor, colleague and/or role model.
• Muse – one who inspires creativity and artistic/academic passion in others.
  

Who can be recommended for the honor?
Any female Kent State faculty or staff member, except those who have previously been honored at this event.

Who can submit?
Any member of the Kent State community, including faculty, staff, emeriti, students and alumni can submit a nomination. Click here to complete the submission form. The deadline for all submissions is Dec. 20.

Honorees will be celebrated at the Women’s Center’s “Mother’s, Mentors and Muses” annual scholarship fundraiser on March 11, to which the university community is invited to attend.

* Note that all names and submissions will be recognized the night of the event.

School of Art Foundations Faculty Exhibit Artwork at Downtown Gallery

The Kent State University School of Art will exhibit the work of numerous faculty members now through Jan. 10 during the Foundations Faculty Show at the Downtown Gallery in Kent. The faculty members to be included in the show are active, professional artists who also teach the Foundations classes required for all undergraduates students. The Downtown Gallery is located at 141 East Main St.

“Since its inception, the Foundations program has increased coordination of pedagogy and content amongst colleagues,” says Christine Havice, director of Kent State’s School of Art. “We are excited to show off the impressive accomplishments of these faculty members who are the first point of contact our students have at the School of Art.”

The four Foundations courses — all of which are mandatory for undergraduate students enrolled in the school — are 2D Composition, 3D Composition, Drawing I, and Digital Media.

The Foundations Faculty Show features a diverse array of work produced by faculty members Julie Friedman, Charles Basham, Kortney Niewierski, Jennifer Omaitz-Collier, Sarah Jane, Kelly Dietrick, Emily Sullivan, Don King and Taryn McMahon, as well as Assistant Professor Mark Schatz, who coordinates the foundations program.
