Kent State Downtown Art Gallery Opens Vibrant Exhibit by Alumna

Kent.
Kent State University’s School of Art Galleries presents the exhibition Painting in the Dark by Kent State alumna and Northeast Ohio painter Patricia Zinsmeister Parker. The show is open and will run through July 14 at the Downtown Gallery, 141 E Main St. in Kent.
Zinsmeister Parker uses both her painting and printmaking skills in order to create extremely colorful compositions that dance along the border of abstract expressionism and post-modern. Her paintings are more abstract displays of still life whereas her prints are simple yet vibrant.
Zinsmeister Parker earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Kent State University. Prior to her career in painting, she was a designer for the American Greetings Corporation and a fashion illustrator for a large department store chain in Northeast Ohio. In 1978, Zinsmeister Parker was invited to teach at the School of Art at The University of Akron. For the next 19 years, she enjoyed a distinguished career as an educator, and in 1996 was awarded an Educational Research and Development Grant.
Her work now resides in many corporate, private and museum collections, including the archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, and the collections of Case Western Reserve University and Kent State University. In 1996, Zinsmeister Parker was recognized by the Senate of the State of Ohio for induction into the Women’s Hall of Fame for achievements and contributions in the field of art. She had exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, the Dayton Art Museum and the Akron Art Museum.
The Downtown Gallery’s hours of operation are Wednesday-Friday, noon -5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

17th Annual Kent Heritage Festival Takes Place on July 7
Visitors and vendors line the streets in downtown Kent
during the annual Kent Heritage Festival.
The 17th annual Kent Heritage Festival will take place on Saturday, July 7, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Kent. About 130 vendors and businesses will participate in the festival with about 25,000 visitors expected.
The festival will feature the first Kent Heritage Festival Car Show, which will take place on College Street. The AMETEK Tree City 5K run, which benefits the United Way of Portage County, will take place from 7 p.m. beginning at Dix Stadium, and fireworks in downtown Kent begin at 10 p.m.
Crafters and food vendors will line Main, North and South Water and Erie streets, and three stages will be set up throughout downtown to provide all-day entertainment. There will be activities for all ages.
The festival is organized by the Kent Area Chamber of Commerce and Kent United Service Organizations, which is composed of the city of Kent, the Kent Licensed Beverage Association, Kent Jaycees, Kent Lions, Kent Junior Mothers, Kent Kiwanis, Kent Rotary Knights of Columbus and Main Street Kent.

Kent State University School of Art Gallery Presents Artists, Teachers, Lovers
Kent State University’s School of Art Gallery presents Artists, Teachers, Lovers, featuring the works of Carol Klingel, Fran Lehnert, John P. Smolko and Tom Lehnert.
The exhibition is open now through Aug. 1 in the School of Art Gallery on the second floor of the Art Building.
These four artists are members of The Critique Group, which is made of eight artists who are either Kent State students or graduates in the teaching field.
The group was founded by artist Tom Lehnert and has been around for more than 20 years. A focus of The Critique group is to get together and evaluate and analyze each other’s works.
Summer Hours of operation for Kent State’s School of Art Gallery are Wednesdays and Fridays from noon-4 p.m.
