Kent State’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Hosts Leadership Workshop

department chairs, deans and campus
leaders.
Kent State University’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is sponsoring a leadership workshop designed for Kent State department chairs, deans and campus leaders. The workshop, “Mentoring Throughout the Academic Year: How to Build Communities of Inclusion, Support and Accountability,” will take place on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 1-3 p.m. in Room 317 at the Kent Student Center. The workshop will be facilitated by Kerry Ann Rockquemore, Ph.D.
Rockquemore works with organizational leaders to facilitate discussions about reimagining how mentoring occurs on college campuses. She describes the challenges that all pre-tenure faculty face on the tenure-track and the unique challenges underrepresented faculty experience. The workshop will culminate in a description of alternative models for internal and external mentoring programs.
Rockquemore is president of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD). Her scholarship has focused on interracial families, biracial identity and the politics of racial categorization. She is author of the books: Beyond Black and Raising Biracial Children, as well as more than two dozen articles and book chapters on multiracial youth.
After Rockquemore became a tenured professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, her focus shifted to improving conditions for pre-tenure faculty by creating supportive communities for professional development, writing productivity and work/life balance. Her award-winning work with underrepresented faculty led to the publication of her most recent book: The Black Academic's Guide to Winning Tenure Without Losing Your Soul. Through the NCFDD, Rockquemore provides workshops for new faculty at colleges across the United States, writes a weekly advice column for Inside Higher Ed, and works with a select group of new faculty each semester in the NCFDD’s Faculty Success Program.

Kent State Alumni Association Presents a Dog-Walking Tour
The Kent State University Alumni Association will host a
dog-walking tour at the Student Green on the Kent Campus
on Aug. 10.
Bring your pet for a dog-walking tour of Kent State University on Aug. 10 during an event presented by the Alumni Association. The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. It will begin at the Student Green outside the Kent Student Center.
Registration is $5, including treats, water and a special gift for you and your pet, and registration must be completed by Aug. 2.
All dogs should have updated vaccinations, need to be wearing their rabies tag and must be on a leash. Waste bags will be provided. Before registering, verify the temperament of your canine to ensure an enjoyable tour for everyone.

From the Office of General Counsel: Ohio Ethics Law – Can I Do That?
Kent State University management and staff are invited to attend a seminar on Ohio Ethics. The two-hour seminar will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. in Franklin Hall on the Kent Campus.
Sponsored by the Office of General Counsel, the seminar will be conducted by a representative from the Ohio Ethics Commission, and will include information about Ohio Ethics Law that pertains to all public sector employees.
Topics to be covered include identifying and acting on potential conflicts of interest, understanding ethics prohibitions related to public contracts, identifying potential post-employment requirements, and general information about complying with the Ohio Ethics Law and related statutes.
University employees are expected to be informed of Ohio’s ethics laws and university policies regarding ethics. Employees are encouraged to attend this training and ask questions to expand their knowledge of Ohio Ethics Laws.

Eells Gallery at Blossom to Feature Kent State Faculty Michael Loderstedt and Lori Kella
The Kent State University School of Art Galleries will present work by Kent State School of Art faculty members Michael Loderstedt and Lori Kella at the Eells Gallery on the grounds of the Blossom Music Center, Aug. 3–Sept. 1. The Eells Gallery is open two hours prior to and through the intermission of every Cleveland Orchestra performance.
Loderstedt, professor of printmaking at Kent State, has worked in printmaking, photography and installations for more than 30 years. He received his B.F.A. from East Carolina University and his M.F.A. from Kent State. His work is in public collections at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Akron Art Museum, the Cleveland Public Library, Progressive Insurance and the Cleveland Clinic.
Kella, assistant professor of art at Kent State, has been featured in exhibitions including “Lori Kella: Coordinates,” part of the Wendy L. Moore Emerging Artist Series at MOCA Cleveland, and “Global Anxieties: Nine Perspectives on a Changing Planet” at the College of Wooster Art Museum. Kella recently received a Creative Workforce Fellowship from the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
Kella received her B.F.A. from the Cleveland Institute of Art and her M.F.A. in photography from Cornell University. Recently, Kella has shown work at Gallery Drei in Dresden, Germany, The Print Center and Flux Space in Philadelphia, and Roy G. Biv Gallery in Columbus.
The Eells Gallery was established through a gift from William H. Eells, one of the founders of Blossom Music Center and the first chairman of its Board of Governors. The gallery is named in honor of his parents, Hastings and Amy Eells. It is located on the Smith Plaza at the Blossom Music Center between the Frank E. Joseph Garden and the Bandwagon Gift Shop.
