Kent Student Center and Center for Student Involvement Host Welcome Back Week Activities

to attend activities celebrating Welcome Back Week at Kent
State from Aug. 25-29.

The Kent Student Center and the Center for Student Involvement invite students, faculty and staff to enjoy a week of Kent State spirit (and free food) to start the academic year, from Aug. 25-29.

The Kent Student Center and the Center for Student Involvement will host an event each day during the first week of classes to welcome back the Kent State family and generate excitement for the start of the year. All events will take place in The Nest (2nd floor, Kent Student Center) from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with the final event of the week (Blue and Gold Friday) taking place across the entire campus.

Students are encouraged to drop in between classes to meet new people and learn how to make the most out of their college experience.

“We know at some point all students will find their way into the Kent Student Center that first week, and we want to make sure they have a welcoming experience here at Kent State,” says Jennifer Gunnoe, associate director of the Center for Student Involvement.

The events are meant to be fun, interactive, informative and casual. Each day will feature a different activity and staff of the Kent Student Center and the Center for Student Involvement will be on hand to talk with students about the many different ways to get involved on campus. Laugh and be amazed with comedian/illusionist Matt the Knife, take some pictures in the photo booth, pick up a free T-shirt or meet Chuck Ayers and Tom Batiuk, cartoonists and Kent State alumni. There is something for everyone and lots of free food to go around.

“Events like these show students what campus has to offer,” says John Camargo, a junior at Kent State. “These events are designed with college students in mind, so it’ll definitely be worth their time, plus who doesn't love free stuff!”

Kent State Athletics to Appreciate Veterans With Free Game Tickets

A noble cause, hard-hitting action on the gridiron and a day of fun-filled Homecoming events will bring fans to Kent State University on Oct. 18. The Golden Flashes will host Army in their 2014 Homecoming game inside Dix Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

For every single game ticket purchased, Kent State Athletics will donate a general admission ticket to local military veterans for the Golden Flashes’ game against Toledo on Nov. 4. The tickets are Kent State’s way of thanking all of those who have helped sustain this country’s freedom.

“It's always an honor to play our military academies, and this gives us a great opportunity to recognize those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces,” says Joel Nielsen, director of athletics at Kent State. “We look forward to providing an exciting atmosphere at Dix Stadium for these soldiers, veterans and their families.”

Tickets to the Army game are $20 for pre-sale or $25 day of game. Please come out and show your support for our veterans by purchasing tickets today!

“We understand that it is a privilege to play this great game of football,” says head coach Paul Haynes. “It is one of the many freedoms provided to us through the unselfish acts and courage of the men and women who serve and have served this great country. This is just one way for us to say thank you.”

Fans can head to Kent State earlier in the day for other university Homecoming events, including the Bowman Cup 5K Race, the hospitality tent at the Williamson Alumni Center and the Homecoming Parade down Main Street.

Tailgating starts at 1:30 p.m. in all parking lots at Dix Stadium. Prizes will be given to the best three tailgate setups. Happy hour inside Dix Stadium runs from 2-3 p.m. with discounts on food and beverages. The Family Fun Zone will feature inflatables, games, face painting and photo opportunities of kids wearing Kent State football equipment from 2-4 p.m.

Single game tickets for all Kent State home games are on sale now. The Golden Flashes kick off their season Aug. 30, hosting Mid-American Conference East Division rival Ohio at 6 p.m. The game will be followed by Portage County’s biggest fireworks display, sponsored by AMETEK.

Kent State University at Stark Announces 2014-15 Theatre Season

Kent State University at Stark has announced the scheduled theatre performances for the 2014-15 academic year. The upcoming productions will be performed at the Kent State Stark Fine Arts Theatre at 6000 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township.

Theatre patrons may also obtain reservations and ticket orders through the Fine Arts Theatre Box Office by calling 330-244-3348, Monday through Friday, 1–5 p.m. The opening night of each theatre production is Scholarship Night. Proceeds from those performances will benefit students in the Kent State Stark theatre and music programs.

Main Street Kent Presents Fourth Annual International Festival With a Chocolate Twist!

Main Street Kent will host the fourth annual International Festival in downtown Kent on Saturday, Sept. 13, from noon to 7 p.m. Admission to the festival is free; event goers can purchase a variety of ethnic cuisine, including food from Germany, Italy and more. Vendors and informational/cultural display booths will be situated on North Water Street, alongside the Hometown Bank Plaza. North Water Street will be closed from Main Street to Columbus Street for the event. Live music and dance will be featured at the Hometown Bank Plaza, including Mediterranean guitar, Japanese dance, African drums, Bavarian brass music, belly dancing and other varieties. The final entertainment schedule will be posted on the Main Street Kent website closer to the date of the event.

New to the event this year is the International Chocolate Walk. For $20, tickets can be purchased in advance to go on a chocolate collecting “world tour” in downtown Kent during the International Festival. It is a great way to explore locally and taste globally. Participating businesses include Carnaby Street Style, Empire, Kent State University Fashion School Store, F.J. Kluth Art Gallery, Gracylane, HOME International Markets, Kent Jaycees (at the event), McKay Bricker Framing and Black Squirrel Gifts, Off the Wagon, Pita Pit, Popped!, Ray’s Place, Secret Cellar, Scribbles Coffee, Sue Nelson Designs, Tree City Coffee and Pastry and Troy Grille. Chocolates from countries such as Belgium, Germany, Ecuador, England, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey will be given to all paid participants.

International Chocolate Walk tickets can be purchased at the Main Street Kent event page at www.mainstreetkent.org/intl-fest-choc-walk/4566331191. Only 200 tickets will be sold. No paper tickets will be mailed; guests will simply come to the event entrance (at the corner of Main and Water streets, in front of the Hometown Bank Plaza at 136 N. Water St.) to pick up maps, passes and bags for collecting the chocolates.

Main Street Kent is a nonprofit organization focused on the revitalization of downtown Kent. It is an affiliate of the national Main Street program and the Heritage Ohio program.

Kent State Alumni Association Hosts Tailgate for Kent State vs. Ohio State Game

The Kent State University Alumni Association will host an alumni and fan tailgate prior to the Kent State vs. Ohio State football game in Columbus on Sept. 13. All Kent State faculty and staff are welcome to join.

This is the third time the alumni association has hosted a tailgate prior to the Ohio State football game. The first time was in 2002 and then again in 2007. Kent State alumni and Golden Flashes’ fans are invited to “Get Your Gold On” and join the association at the game.
