Downtown Gallery.

The Kent State University School of Art's Downtown Gallery will present the National Collage Society’s Annual Postcard Collage Show from June 19 through July 20 in the Downtown Gallery. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, June 20, from 5-7 p.m., which is free and open to the public. The gallery is located at 141 E. Main St. in Kent, and is open Wednesday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Annual Postcard Collage Show is a small format (4”x6”), invitational exhibition that gives each participating National Collage Society member an opportunity to display one original collage they select for entry.

The National Collage Society, Inc. (NCS, Inc.) is an art foundation formed to foster the appreciation and interest in the art medium of collage. The NCS, Inc. promotes the advancement of collage as a major art medium and assists in the education of the public through exhibits, workshops, lectures and publications.

Gretchen Bierbaum, president of the National Collage Society, is hosting a Collage Techniques Workshop, Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshops will be held at the Downtown Gallery. Collage in all Dimensions - Techniques to Alter and Transfer Images, the techniques book written by Bierbaum, will be used at this workshop.

Start Planning Your Homecoming Events

Although Homecoming won’t take place until Oct. 5, it’s not too early to start planning your Homecoming events. Many Homecoming activities are already being scheduled including the Bowman Cup 5K Race, Kiss on the K, the parade and more!

The deadline to register Homecoming events being planned by university departments or offices is Friday, Aug. 2. The registration form is available on the Kent State University Alumni Association’s website and can be submitted online. Registered events will be promoted on the Homecoming website and, as space allows, in other marketing materials.

10th Annual AMETEK Tree City 5K for United Way of Portage County Scheduled for July 6

The 10th annual AMETEK Tree City 5K benefitting the United Way of Portage County will take place on Saturday, July 6, beginning at Dix Stadium. Again this year, the race is part of the annual Kent Heritage Festival, and the money raised will be used to fund more than 43 health and human service programs in the Portage County community. Kent State University is one of many sponsors.

Last year, there were 230 registered runners in the Tree City 5K, and this year United Way is hoping for 300 participants. United Way hopes the addition of the walking component to the 5K will attract more participants.

The Tree City 5K is a scenic point-to-point course, which will run from Kent State’s Dix Stadium through the Kent Campus and finish in the city of Kent.

“I’m looking forward to a perfect day in Kent for our 5K race and walk,” says Stephanie Rummel, director of development for the United Way of Portage County.

Rummel plans to raise additional funding this year by asking family, friends and business associates to sponsor her to walk instead of work the event. This way, she can help with the race, but raise additional awareness and money for the community.

Participants can pre-register online through July 3. Early registration will take place at Dairy Queen on 1443 South Water St., Kent, on July 5 from 5 to 7 p.m., and July 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The pre-registration fee is $20, and the fee for participants registering the day of the race is $25.

Check-in on race day will be from 6 to 6:45 p.m., rain or shine, at Dix Stadium. The race will begin at 7 p.m., and the race course closes at 8:15 p.m. There are awards and cash prizes for qualifying participants. Awards are given for the top three males and females overall, top masters male and female and top three in age groups.

An after party, for participants 21 and older, which is sponsored by Yuengling Light, will take place at the 157 Lounge in downtown Kent. Race entry includes food, one Yuengling Light and a chance to win numerous door prizes that have been donated by local businesses.

Reserve a Table for the 2013 Back-to-School Summer Blastoff

that takes place Aug. 25.

Kent State University will welcome new and returning students for the Fall 2013 Semester during its Back-to-School Summer Blastoff on Sunday, Aug. 25. The Summer Blastoff is an event developed by the Center for Student Involvement and the Office of Student Success Programs with the help of Undergraduate Student Government.

“Student organizations and university departments are a part of the celebration to share what they can offer Kent State students,” says Jennifer Gunnoe, associate director of the Center for Student Involvement.

Kent State departments and organizations are encouraged to reserve tables at the event to share the resources that they offer to new students. The Center of Student Involvement is anticipating hundreds of different organizations and departments to participate in the event this year.

Departments and organizations are advised to include at their tables, information for students on how to follow-up with the department or organization following the event.

To reserve a table for your organization or department, fill out and submit the application form by Aug. 21.
