Save the Date for Veterans Day Observance Nov. 10

Kent State will hold its annual Veterans Day observance on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 3:30 p.m. on Risman Plaza. The outdoor program will include a flag-raising ceremony conducted by a joint color guard from the Army and Air Force ROTC programs, remarks from Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton and Rachel Anderson, director of the Center of Adult and Veteran Services.

A reception in the Kent Student Center Kiva lobby will follow the brief program.

The university community, as well as residents of the city of Kent and surrounding communities, are invited to attend and show appreciation for those who have served or are currently serving in a branch of the military. A special invitation is extended to faculty and staff who are in the military or have family members in the military, and community members who are veterans. Veterans in attendance will receive a certificate of appreciation and a Kent State Centennial memento.

Kent State Holds Fifth Annual Entrepreneurship Extravaganza on Nov. 4-5

Kent State University's Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation presents the fifth annual Entrepreneurship Extravaganza on Thursday, Nov. 4, and Friday, Nov. 5. The event will include several workshops, panel discussions and speakers, allowing attendees to learn from experienced entrepreneurs about launching and accelerating their businesses. The program is free and open to the community and to all students.

"The workshops and panel discussions will follow three tracks: Inspire, Idea and Implement," explains Julie Messing, director for the Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation at Kent State. "The workshops and panel discussions will focus on minority and not-for-profit entrepreneurship. The first track looks at making the transition from student to entrepreneur, networking, supply chain opportunities for minorities and does sex sell in advertising. The second track reviews such things as identifying an opportunity, does a not-for-profit make sense, protecting your idea, and social media and marketing. Finally, the third track discusses funding your business and alternatives to launching a new business."

A highlight of Entrepreneurship Extravaganza is the Michael D. Solomon Speaker Series in Entrepreneurship, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the Kent Student Center Kiva. This year's keynote speaker is Andre "Thunder" Thornton, president and CEO of ASW Global, a supply chain management company based in Mogadore, Ohio. Thornton is also a Cleveland baseball legend who played professional baseball for 21 years.

Thornton has more than 20 years of experience in entrepreneurial ventures. He also is serving as Kent State's first President's Ambassador, a new program created and implemented out of the university's Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The program is a vehicle for securing the services of a local, high-level person of color who will serve as a catalyst for change, promoting pluralistic understanding and mutual respect among diverse constituencies of students, staff, faculty and administrators at the university.

A reception in Room 204 of the Kent Student Center will follow Thornton's speech.

On Nov. 5, "Lunch with an Entrepreneur" will be offered starting at noon in the Kent Student Center Ballroom. Participants will also hear from successful entrepreneurs, including Warren Anderson, Darrell McNair and Thornton, as they share their "Minority Success Stories." Lunch is free for those that pre-register.

All participants in this year's Entrepreneurship Extravaganza will receive a complimentary entrepreneurial took kit. Events are free and open to the public, however, registration is requested. Kent State Day at Cleveland Browns Game Nov. 7

A special offer is being extended for the Kent State University community to enjoy a Cleveland Browns game for a reduced price.

The Browns are offering discounts for designated seats at the Browns vs. New England Patriots game at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Nov. 7. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. All seats are in the upper deck, and range in price from $33 to $42 each. Orders should also include a $2 handling fee. All tickets will be held at the will-call window.

Recreational Services to Host Annual Haunted wRECk for Children 12 and Under

Join the monsters, ghouls and goblins lurking about at the Kent State Student Recreation and Wellness Center and Ice Arena on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Haunted wRECk is a free trick-or-treat costume party designed for children age 12 and under, and will include seven differently themed areas for participants to explore and collect treats!

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Donations of nonperishable food items are greatly appreciated and will be donated to Kent Social Services.

The festive night includes a spooky tour that begins at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, where "ghoul guides" will escort young guests through seven decorated themed areas for trick-or-treating. After exploring those areas, trick-or-treaters can hitch a ride over to the Ice Arena on the Spooky Express for more treats, free food and crafts. Participants are then invited to judge a staff decorating competition on the Spooky Express ride back to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center by voting for favorite themed area.

College of Public Health Launches Public Health Speaker Series

Kent State University's College of Public Health is launching a speaker series with on Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Moulton Hall Ballroom, with Susan J. Bondy, an associate professor at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Bondy is a social epidemiologist with more than 20 years of research experience in Canada. Her work has addressed social determinants of health across chronic and infectious diseases. She will be speaking about the application of social epidemiological methods to tobacco prevention and control.

The speaker series is sponsored by the College of Public Health and the Public Health Student Alliance.

The College of Public Health at Kent State is Ohio's second college of public health. It was established to help meet the demonstrated state and national need for public health professionals. According to a February 2008 report by the Association of Schools of Public Health, America will need 250,000 more public health workers by 2020 - a well-educated, technologically savvy and multidisciplinary workforce that includes epidemiologists, biostatisticians, health educators, health program administrators, health policy analysts, public health physicians and nurses, and occupational and environmental health specialists.

U.S. Department of Education Official to Speak at Kent State's Distinguished Lecture Series

Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Foreign Language Education for the U.S. Department of Education Andre Lewis will speak at Kent State University. The College of Education, Health and Human Services' Gerald H. Read Center for International and Intercultural Education at Kent State University will present the speech as part of its distinguished lecture series on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Kiva.

His continual perseverance as a public servant enabled him to be the first person in the U.S. Department of Education to hold this high-level position, an illustration of the increasing importance of internationalization in education. In this position, Lewis oversees the implementation of international language education and outreach at the K-12 and post-secondary level, one of President Barack Obama's and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's priorities

The lecture kicks off the Celebrating College Teaching Conference, which will be held Oct. 28-29 at the Kent Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. Upcoming Standing Rock Cultural Celebrations to Add to Your Calendar

Standing Rock Cultural Arts, a non-profit art and educational organization based in downtown Kent, will be holding numerous events in the coming months.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, the organization will host its eighth annual Day of the Dead art exhibition with an opening reception at 8 p.m. Day of the Dead, or "Dia de los Muertos" is a Mexican holiday that honors those who have passed before us with music, food, drink and art.

On Saturday, Nov. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. the organization will host a cider festival at the Home Savings Plaza in downtown Kent. Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the ice carving exhibition on Feb. 12, 2011 from 1 to 4 p.m., also at the Home Savings Plaza.

College of Nursing Event Explores Mental Health Needs of Veterans

The College of Nursing presents No Health Without Mental Health: Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Veterans and Their Families on Nov. 3.

The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. in Henderson Hall. Free parking is available in the R5 lot in front of Henderson Hall.

Featured speakers are Dr. Marc Cooper and Major Scott Smith, both of the Moncrief Army Hospital.

Our country has approximately 2.5 million active and reserve members of the U.S. military and nearly 24 million U.S. veterans. They and their families face life and health challenges that differ from those of civilians. Families may have to cope with deployment and separation from each other; illnesses and injuries of their returning veteran; and mental health effects of military service, disruptions in parenting and caregiver stress. The purposes of this program are to explore the mental health needs of veterans and their families and to describe available services.

Student Entrepreneurs to Exhibit Work at JumpStart Annual Community Meeting

Six students from the College of Business and the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising will showcase their work at the JumpStart Annual Community Meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 26. The event, which will showcase entrepreneurs and student entrepreneurs from Northeast Ohio, will take place at the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University from 3:30-5 p.m. The JumpStart Annual Update will follow from 5- 5:45 p.m.

Cleveland-based JumpStart is a nationally recognized non-profit organization that creates economic transformation by providing resources to entrepreneurs by leading high potential early-stage companies.

"I believe Kent State will have the greatest presence in the student entrepreneur section," Julie Messing, director, Center for Entrepreneurship says.

This free event is a networking opportunity with more than 500 entrepreneurs, community members, investors and students in attendance. The Showcase of Entrepreneurs and Student Entrepreneurs will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Kent State Hosts Girl Scouts for College Preview Day on Nov. 6

Kent State University is calling all Girl Scouts as the university hosts a college preview day on Saturday, Nov. 6. Members of Girl Scouts of North East Ohio in grades 9 through 12 (Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts) can sign up to visit the region's largest public research university and learn more about college life, admissions, financial aid and careers.

The fall "Sneak-A-Peek Day" at Kent State will focus on career choices in the sciences. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Kent Student Center with a welcome by Rev. Ronald Fowler, special assistant to Kent State's Office of the President; Dr. John Stalvey, associate dean of Kent State's College of Arts and Sciences; and Dr. Geraldine Hayes Nelson, assistant vice president for pipeline initiatives and diversity programming at Kent State.

The visiting Girl Scouts will tour campus departments and facilities, including the 3-D Classroom, and meet female faculty members in fields such as biology and chemistry. Their tour guides will be Kent State students who are members of the Science Learning Community, a living/learning community for first-year Kent State students considering a major in biology, chemistry, geology, computer science, math, physics or related fields (Pre-Med, Pre-Pharm, Pre-Dentistry, Med Tech, Bio Tech).

The visit also includes a peek at college life. The Girl Scouts will enjoy lunch, tailgate at Kent State's fan-friendly FlashZone, meet members of Kent State women's basketball team and attend the Kent State versus Temple University football game at 2 p.m. at Dix Stadium.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Girl Scouts to experience for themselves what college and more specifically, what Kent State has to offer," Nelson says. "Students will serve as hosts to the Girl Scouts, answering their questions and sharing first-hand what it is like to be a college student enrolled in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) major."

As Fowler articulates, "Dreams matter, and at Kent State, your dreams can be transformed into reality."

To participate in this event, the cost is $5. The cost includes transportation, lunch and a ticket to the football game. Registration is required before the Oct. 28 deadline.
