Recreation Fields to be Constructed

The Department of Recreational Services is pleased to announce the construction of its new recreational fields across Summit street from the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The site will provide Kent State students, faculty and staff with two lighted recreation fields, two tennis courts, a basketball court, updated parking, a water feature and extensive landscaping.

The fields will be ready for use by fall 2011, with construction starting this November. The completed fields will be available for Kent State purposes, as well as for community use.

A preview event, showcasing the architectural renderings of the fields will be hosted by Lefton on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at noon. The celebration will take place at the field located directly across Summit Street from the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, next to Stewart Hall.

The Department of Recreational Services is proud to provide the students, faculty and staff of Kent State University and members of the surrounding community with outstanding recreational, fitness and wellness opportunities. School of Art Announces Fall Exhibition Schedule

Centennial Alumni Exhibition: Firsts, Aug. 31 - Oct. 1, 2010

Closing Reception: Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, 5-8 p.m.
Celebrating our 100 years, the Centennial Alumni Exhibition: Firsts, will highlight the work of alumni from the Schools of Art and Visual Communications Design. Our guest juror, Dan Tranberg, adjunct faculty of visual art and technology at the Cleveland Institute of Art and an art critic and weekly columnist for The Plain Dealer, selected the works of 35 alumni for this first of two exhibitions representing graduates from the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. The second exhibition, scheduled for January 2011, will feature the work of later graduates.

Al Bright, Oct. 12 - Nov. 19, 2010

Opening reception Friday Oct. 15, 5-8 p.m.
Al Bright graduated from Youngstown State University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art education. He earned his Master of Arts in painting from Kent State in 1965 and is an emeritus faculty member of Youngstown State. Bright has exhibited his work throughout the country and has produced more than 50 solo exhibitions. Bright's work is also held in numerous permanent and private collections throughout the country.

Fine Art, Dec. 7 - 10, 2010

Group exhibitions of Bachelor of Fine Arts candidates in both the crafts and fine art divisions will feature works in ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry/metals, painting, drawing, sculpture and prints.

Homecoming Office Decorating Contest
Let the blue and gold fly this year as the Office of Alumni Relations invites departments and offices on campus to show their Kent State pride! This year's theme is Flashback to the Future.

Office decorations should remain up from Oct. 4 through Oct.10.

Participants will be judged on creativity, use of theme, use of physical space, and visual appearance and appeal. Prizes will be awarded. Judging will take place Friday, Oct. 9. The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 24.

2010 Homecoming Shirts
Another great way to wear your spirit is with the Homecoming T-shirt that will be available for $10 in the Kent State bookstore after Aug. 30. Designed by Kent State staff, the shirt depicts the legendary rivalry between the Golden Flashes and The University of Akron's football squads.

Make sure to help us show our Kent State pride this year by donning your best Kent State apparel or a new Homecoming shirt and getting your staff together to compete in the Office Decorating Contest.

College of Architecture and Environmental Design Announces 2010 Toguchi Lecture

The College of Architecture and Environmental Design will host guest lecturer Lawrence Scarpa as part of its 2010 Toguchi Lecture Series. Scarpa, of Pugh and Scarpa Architects, has received 48 eight major design awards and is widely recognized in the national architecture community. The lecture will be held in the University Auditorium in Cartwright Hall, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7. It is free and open to the public, and no RSVP is required.

In 2004 The Architectural League of New York selected Scarpa as an "Emerging Voice" in architecture. His work was recently exhibited at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. He has been featured in Newsweek and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2009, Interior Design Magazine honored him with their Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010, he was awarded the National Architecture Firm Award from the AIA. Lawrence received a Bachelor of Design in 1981 and a Master of Architecture in 1987, both from the University of Florida.

His awards have included 15 National American Institute of Architects(AIA) Awards, 2005 Record Houses, 2003 Record Interiors, 2003 Rudy Bruner Prize, 2006 and 2003 AIA Committee on the Environment "Top Ten Green Building" Awards and was a finalist for the World Habitat Award, one of ten firms selected worldwide. including 15 National American Institute of Architects(AIA) Awards, 2005 Record Houses, 2003 Record Interiors, 2003 Rudy Bruner Prize, 2006 and 2003 AIA Committee on the Environment "Top Ten Green Building" Awards and was a finalist for the World Habitat Award, one of ten firms selected worldwide.

The Kent Student Center is excited to continue a beloved tradition into its 38th year as the Olde English Yuletide Feaste is presented in the Kent Student Center Ballroom on the evenings of Dec. 2, 3 and 4.

The Kent State University Chorale, directed by Scott MacPherson, dresses in period costume and entertains with madrigal music, dancing, juggling and more. Experience the wonder inside the Kent Student Center Ballroom which is magically transformed into Queen Elizabeth's castle, creating the perfect atmosphere for a night of holiday merriment and mirth.

Diversity Trainings Offered in September

A series of five classes and a faculty search workshop are being offered to the university community this fall.

Instructor-led workshops starting in September 2010 include:

• Americans with Disabilities: Your Rights as an Employee
• Diversity: Basic 101
• Understanding Yourself and Others: Learn your Diverse Work Style
• Diversity in the Workplace: Generational Differences
• Sexual Harassment

How to Conduct a Diverse Faculty Search Workshop

The purpose of the workshop is to give deans, chairs and hiring officials exactly what the title of the workshop promises: Effective and Efficient Techniques on How to Diversify the Faculty and Conduct Your Search.

Workshop goals are:

• Provide effective and efficient techniques on how to diversify the faculty
• Provide tools that can be used to attract a diverse candidate pool
• Debunk commonly held myths
• Examine hiring biases
• Learn how to create a welcoming environment

Standing Rock Cultural Arts Presents Sundays at 1 Painting Exhibit

Standing Rock Cultural Arts gets the fall off to a colorful start with Sundays at 1, a watercolor painting exhibition at the North Water Street Gallery. The show features the artists of Henry Walker's watercolor class, Claire Culleton, Maureen Keller, Tom Auld and the work of the instructor himself.

The show opens Sept. 4 with an 8 p.m. reception, and will be open during regular gallery hours until Oct. 23. The North Water Street Gallery is located at 257 N. Water St. in Kent.

Gallery hours are Thursdays-Saturdays, from 1 - 5 p.m. or by appointment. The gallery can be reached by phone at 330-673-4970. Updates and more information are also available on the Standing Rock Cultural Arts website.

Begin or Continue CommonSpot Training With New Round of Sessions

The Kent State University Communications and Marketing Web Team serves as the starting point for departments and faculty members across campuses that would like to take advantage of CommonSpot, the university's content management system, to develop their own websites. Templates which integrate with the institutional website's redesign and support the university's visual identity program are available at no charge.

CommonSpot training sessions are offered once a month for new users, users wanting a refresher and those seeking more advanced knowledge. Two levels of training, beginner and intermediate, are offered. There is no deadline for registration, but space is limited to 20 seats.

Upcoming Beginner Training Dates

Beginner training is best for those who have never used CommonSpot. It's also a great opportunity to go over concepts that need to be reviewed.

If you or someone from your department has not met with a representative from University Communications and Marketing regarding your website, please schedule a scope meeting before attending one of these training sessions.

Beginner training session will be offered on the following dates:

Sept. 27: 10 a.m. - noon
Oct. 28: 2 - 4 p.m.
Nov. 22: - 9 - 11 a.m.
Dec. 16: 1 - 3 p.m.

Upcoming Intermediate Training Dates

Intermediate sessions are best for users with some experience using CommonSpot and who are ready to enhance their sites with calls to action, news, faculty profiles, video and other elements.

Intermediate training sessions will be offered on the following dates:

Sept. 17: 9 - 11 a.m.
Oct. 13: - 2 - 4 p.m.
Nov. 11: - 2- 4 p.m.
