Kent State University Panel Discussion Will Explore Puerto Rico Statehood
Kent State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are sponsoring a panel discussion titled “Puerto Rico: The 51st Star On the U.S. Flag?” on Jan. 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Kiva. A dessert and coffee reception will follow the discussion in the Multicultural Center, Room 206 of the Kent Student Center, which is directly above the Kiva. The event is free and open to the public.
Supported by the Hispanic Alliance Inc., Kent State Admissions, and the Spanish and Latino Student Association (SALSA), the discussion will provide participants with the opportunity to explore the complex issue from diverse angles. The history of Puerto Rico’s connection as a U.S. territory and the arguments for independence, status quo and statehood are all aspects influencing the issue to be discussed by the panel.
Cleveland-area trial lawyer and Kent State President's Ambassador José C. Feliciano will moderate the panel discussion.
“This forum will present a discussion focusing on the historic statehood vote by Puerto Rico in the fall 2012 election,” says Joseph Ortiz, Ph.D., geology professor and provost faculty associate for Kent State’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, who will serve on the discussion panel.
Other panel members include Jose E. Lopez, adjunct professor and executive director for the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Juan Molina Crespo, executive director, Hispanic Alliance Inc., in Cleveland; Amoaba Gooden, Ph.D., chair of Kent State’s Department of Pan-African Studies; David Kaplan, Ph.D., professor in Kent State’s Department of Geography; and Elizabeth Pryor-Smith, Ph.D., history professor at Kent State.

Comedian John Caparulo to Perform at Kent State University
Comedian and Kent State alumnus
John Caparulo will perform at Kent State
on Jan. 31.
Comedian and Kent State alumnus John Caparulo will take the stage at the Kent Student Center Ballroom on Thursday, Jan. 31. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show will begin at 8 p.m.
Tickets cost $5 for Kent State students, $10 for the general public and can be purchased from the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center ticket office and from Ticketmaster.
Caparulo made his stand-up debut in 1997 in comedy clubs around Cleveland and Pittsburgh. He had his big break in 2003 at the “Just For Laughs Festival” where his impressive stand-up act landed him a sitcom deal. You may also recognize him from his multiple television appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Comedy Central Presents, and Blue Collar Comedy: The Next Generation, and as a regular on Chelsea Lately.
Caparulo’s first feature film, Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show, was released in 2008, as well as his one-hour special called Meet Cap that is now available on CD/DVD. He also voices the role of “Headphone Joe” in the Disney Channel series Fish Hooks. In 2010, Caparulo became the spokesperson for Edge Shave Gel. When he is not busy touring the nation doing his stand-up acts, you can catch him hosting his own radio show, The Mad Cap Hour, on Sirius/XM Blue Collar Radio.

New York-Based Fashion Designer Suede to Unveil New SUEDEsays Fabric Line
"Project Runway" All*Star and Kent State grad celebrates launch with free fashion show
New York-based fashion designer and Kent State alumnus
Suede will unveil his new SUEDEsays line of fabrics and
patterns during a free fashion show on Feb. 2, in the Rockwell
Hall Auditorium on the Kent Campus.
New York-based fashion designer, Season 5 "Project Runway" contestant and Kent State University graduate Suede will introduce his new SUEDEsays line of fabrics and patterns with a free fashion show Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Rockwell Hall Auditorium at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Suede, who also recently competed on “Project Runway All Stars” Season 2, will unveil his SUEDEsays line with 15 exclusive runway looks. The fashion show, presented in conjunction with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Simplicity, The Fashion School at Kent State University and Springs Creative, will also involve current Kent State students — 11 of the 15 models in the show are Kent State students, and the Fashion Student Organization will provide assistance on the day of the show.
The event will include a free meet-and-greet between show times. Suede also will appear at the Hudson Jo-Ann store at 5381 Darrow Rd. on Friday, Feb. 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Kent State Student Financial Aid Office to Host Ohio College Goal Sunday
Kent State University will host the statewide college financial aid event "College Goal Sunday" on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at Franklin Hall on the Kent Campus. The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans, as well as the need-based state grants. Families are encouraged to register for the free event at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or by calling 1-800-233-6734. While walk-ins are welcome, registration is encouraged.
