After winning a program record 11 games, the Kent State Golden Flashes football team will take on Arkansas State on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., in the GoDaddy.com Bowl game. This is the third bowl appearance for the Flashes; they attended the Refrigerator Bowl in 1954 and the Tangerine Bowl in 1972. The game kicks off at 9 p.m. and will air on ESPN.

A travel package is available for all interested alumni, fans and friends of Kent State. The package includes admission into the official pregame reception, hotel accommodations in the designated Kent State fan hotel, a game ticket in the official Kent State section, a welcome event, a bowl souvenir and more.

Mid-American Conference teams (Northern Illinois, Miami, Central Michigan) have won the GoDaddy.com Bowl in each of the past three seasons. A record seven MAC teams will be playing in bowl games, including Northern Illinois in the Discover Orange Bowl. Last year, the MAC went 4-1 in bowl games, winning the ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup.

University Libraries to Hold Stress-Free Zone Event, Dec. 10 and 11

The fall semester is winding down quickly, and finals week, one of the most stressful times of the semester, begins today.

To ease the stress of finals week, Kent State University Libraries is holding a Stress-Free Zone event on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 10 and 11, from 3-5 p.m. Pet therapy dogs are returning this year, and there will be free popcorn and drinks for all. The Stress-Free Zone event also will provide Wii games and much more, and is open to all students, faculty and staff.

Karen Hillman, director of marketing, communications and public relations for University Libraries, says students always look forward to the Stress Free Zone.

“Apparently it gets some attention,” Hillman says. “We expect to nearly double the number of faculty and students that visit the library for this event.”

Flu Shot Clinic at DeWeese Health Center on Dec. 13

On Thursday, Dec. 13, University Health Services will host a flu clinic from 2 to 5 p.m. at the DeWeese Health Center. The clinic is open to Kent State University faculty and staff (and their dependents age six and above) and provide a convenient way for employees and their families to get their annual immunization.

Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is encouraged. If you are interested in receiving a flu shot, click here to sign up. Make sure to bring the appropriate forms (Flu Shot and Consent Form) with you to your scheduled appointment. The forms will be available to print when you register for your vaccine.

For employees and their dependents covered by one of Kent State's medical providers, Anthem or Medical Mutual, the cost of the flu shot is covered in full. You must bring your insurance ID card with you. For all others, the cost is $20, payable by cash or check.

WKSU Brightens the Season With Music and More

Special holiday programming planned for December

WKSU makes the season sparkle with a series of holiday-themed programs, and classical and folk music streams for the month of December. Holiday music streams are currently available online or through WKSU’s iPhone and Android apps. Music moves to WKSU’s HD-2: Folk Alley and HD-3: Classical HD Radio channels on Dec. 10 with Christmas classical music being added with more frequency to general on-air broadcasts through Dec. 25. Special, stand-alone programs start on Monday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. with a new installment of NPR’s Hanukkah Lights featuring Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz. The next week, evenings at 8 p.m. offer a variety of Christmas music, from early music on Monday and classic works on Tuesday and Wednesday to carols on Thursday and Celtic selections on Friday (which also hosts other folk shows until midnight).

On Saturday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m., Garrison Keillor presents a holiday-centered A Prairie Home Companion (re-aired on Dec. 23 at 10 a.m.), followed by folk host Jim Blum’s annual mix of holiday music – new and old. The schedule for Sunday, Dec. 23, includes more public radio music programs for the holidays and Baroque Era Christmas with host David Roden.

On Christmas Eve morning, WKSU airs the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols live from King’s College in Cambridge. The Christmas Day celebration starts early with non-stop classical Christmas music beginning after NPR’s All Things Considered on Dec. 24 and airing until the return of Morning Edition at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Holiday observations continue on Dec. 26, at 8 p.m. with the Kwanzaa program, A Season’s Griot, hosted by storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson. Seasonal programming comes to an end on WKSU with the traditional New Year’s Day performance by the Vienna Philharmonic, live from the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The concert of waltzes, polkas and other lively tunes begins at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 1, with the orchestra under the baton of Cleveland Orchestra Music Director Franz Welser-Möst.

WKSU broadcasts NPR and Classical Music at 89.7 FM, and is a service of Kent State University. WKSU programming is also heard on WKRW 89.3 FM in Wooster, WKRJ 91.5 FM in Dover/New Philadelphia, WKSV 89.1 FM in Thompson, WNRK 90.7 in Norwalk and W239AZ 95.7 FM in Ashland. Kent State Downtown Gallery Presents Annual Small Works Competition and Sale

A variety of media and styles presented by area artists

Kent State University School of Art Galleries will host the annual “Small Works Competition,” through Dec. 22 at the Downtown Gallery.

The Downtown Gallery is located at 141 E. Main St. in downtown Kent. Free parking is available behind the gallery.

The Small Works Competition is open to regional and local artists, and Kent State students, faculty and staff. The art must fall within a 12-inch-by-12-inch-by-12-inch size requirement.

The exhibition promises to represent a variety of artistic styles and techniques. Last year’s competition featured jewelry and metal, paintings, prints, ceramics and more.

Gallery visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase their favorite pieces, supporting local artists while also finding unique holiday gifts.
