Farewell Reception Honoring State Rep. Kathleen Chandler Nov. 22

On Monday, Nov. 22, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. in Room 204 of the Kent Student Center, the Office of University Relations will hold a farewell reception honoring our outgoing State Representative, Kathleen Chandler. She has proudly represented the people of the 68th House District in the Ohio House of Representatives for the past eight years. Chandler is now leaving office due to term limits.

Rep. Chandler earned both bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State University. She then returned to Ohio to earn a Master of Public Administration degree (with a focus on finance and personnel management) from Kent State University.

Chandler served her local community for more than two decades before her election to the Ohio House. She began her career as a Kent city councilwoman, a post she held for eight years. Voters in Kent then elected her to be their mayor. She followed up a seven-year stint in that office with six years as a Portage County commissioner.

Healthy Life Screening to Provide Vital Tests at the Kent Student Center Nov. 29

Kent State has partnered with Healthy Life Screening to offer the opportunity to participate in heart and vascular screenings in the workplace. The screening event will take place Monday, Nov. 29, in the Kent Student Center, Room 204. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 1-866-523-5433.

The tests offered are shown to be highly effective in identifying the risk of death from heart disease. The test are ultrasound-based, involve no radiation, no pain and no needles and can all be done in less than 30 minutes.

Kent State University will have no access to individual results; they are sent directly to your home to share with your physician at your discretion. The package of tests includes an echocardiogram, a carotid artery ultrasound, an abdominal aorta ultrasound, an ankle brachial index and a blood pressure screening.

The cost to employees and spouses is $175 for all five tests. Similar tests may cost more than $2,000 in a hospital.

"Godmother of Title IX" to Speak at Kent State

Save the date for Monday, Dec. 6, as Kent State University hosts Dr. Bernice Sandler. Considered the "Godmother of Title IX," Sandler will speak in the Kent Student Center Kiva from 5 to 6:30 p.m. She played a major role in the development and passage of Title IX and other laws prohibiting sex discrimination in education, and has been associated with Title IX longer than any other person. The event is free and open to the public.

Sandler is a senior scholar at the Women's Research and Education Institute in Washington, D.C., where she consults with institutions and others about achieving equity for women and is an adjunct associate professor at Drexel University College of Medicine. She has given more than 2,500 presentations, has written more than 100 articles and is well-known for her expertise in women's educational equity in general as well as in sexual harassment, the chilly classroom climate, and her knowledge of policies, programs and strategies concerning women on campus. She also serves as an expert witness in discrimination and sexual harassment cases.

She previously directed the Project on the Status and Education of Women at the Association of American Colleges where she published more than 100 reports. She has a long list of firsts such as the first reports on campus sexual harassment, gang rape, campus peer harassment, and the chilly climate for women, including the first report on how men and women are treated differently in the classroom. She was the first person appointed to a Congressional committee staff to work specifically on women's issues and the first person to testify before a Congressional committee about discrimination against women in education. In the 1970s, she filed the first charges of sex discrimination against more than 250 institutions at a time when there were no laws prohibiting sex discrimination in education.

This program is presented by the Kent State IDEAL (Institutions Developing Excellence in Academic Leadership) Project, a National Science Foundation-funded project to enhance the climate for scholarly and collegial community for women and under-represented groups in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines.

Kent State's First Feature Film Premieres Next Week

Breaking News, Kent State's first feature film, will be introduced to the public at a red carpet premiere Wednesday, Dec. 1 at the Kent Stage. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the movie starts at 8 p.m. A panel discussion with members of the cast and crew will take place after the film.

Breaking News will also be shown at the Kent Student Center Kiva on Friday, Dec. 3. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film will be shown at 8 p.m.

Meditation Group Offered at Women's Center Beginning Dec. 8

The Women's Center yoga and meditation series has met with great success and is being expanded to include a lunchtime meditation drop-in group for faculty and staff. This semester, meditation was introduced through a series of three well-received brown bag lunches.

Monthly guided meditation will be offered on the second Wednesday of each month, from noon to 1 p.m, beginning Dec. 8 and ending May 11, 2011. There is no registration or fee required and all sessions are held at the Women's Center Carriage House.

The instructor, Margot Milcetich, has taught meditation since 1976, and hatha yoga since 1983. In the 90s, Milcetich learned through personal experience how easy it was to become overwhelmed by helping others and discovered the art of staying sane. Since 2004, she has been busy teaching and publishing though Brahmrishi Yoga, a school she founded for teaching yoga teachers.

Wide Variety of World AIDS Day Events on the Agenda at Kent State University at Stark

A week of diverse events will commemorate World AIDS Day, which takes place each Dec. 1. In addition to the list of events, AIDS Memorial Quilt Panels will be on display in the Campus Center from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3. Each panel memorializes the life of a person lost to AIDS.

Beautiful "Bead for Life" jewelry items will be for sale during the entire week in the Campus Center. Sale of the beads benefits HIV positive or displaced Ugandan women.
