Kent State Athletics Hosts Starner Distinguished Speaker
Kent State University alumna Bonnie Beachy, '82, will
keynote the 12th annual Starner Distinguished Speaker
Series on Sept. 11.
Kent State University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics presents the 12th annual Starner Distinguished Speaker Series at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Cartwright Hall. This year's keynote address “The Fight,” will be given by Kent State alumna Bonnie Beachy, '82, who currently serves as an assistant principal at Smith Middle School in Cypress, Texas. The event is free and open to the public.
With seven varsity letters to her credit, Beachy is the premier female student-athlete in the illustrious history of Kent State athletics. Beachy, who earned four letters in basketball and three in tennis, is the all-time leading scorer in Kent State basketball history, regardless of gender, with 2,071 points. A three-time team MVP and two-time first team All-Mid-American Conference selection, Beachy stands fourth in women's basketball history in both career rebounds (829) and steals (303).
"We are very excited to have Bonnie back on campus," says Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen. "She was an exemplary student-athlete, and I think our athletes will learn a lot from her."
A 1988 Kent State Varsity "K" Hall of Fame inductee, Beachy is the only woman in Kent State history to have her uniform number retired (No. 13). Beachy was a rare two-sport Division I student-athlete who also starred on the tennis court where she was team MVP for the Golden Flashes.
In 1982, Beachy earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Kent State and moved to Houston for job prospects. After serving as co-owner of a security company for five years, Beachy entered the education field to follow her passion of teaching and coaching. For the next 15 years, Beachy would teach and coach in the Clear Lake and Cy-Fair school districts before earning a master of education from Prairie View A&M University.
A 1978 graduate of Struthers High School, just outside of Youngstown, Ohio, Beachy was a three-sport standout and is the school's all-time leading scorer in girls basketball. She currently resides in Cypress, Texas.
The Starner Distinguished Speaker series is made possible by Kent State alumni Buzz and Marilyn Starner. The Starners endowed the speaker series to expose current student-athletes to alumni who have successfully transferred their lessons from athletic competition and student involvement to meaningful careers outside of athletics. Buzz, '67, and Marilyn, '71, have been actively involved in supporting athletic programs at Kent State for many years. The Jackson Township couple is pleased with the strong emphasis that Kent State places on the academic skills of athletes and believes that the skills students develop in athletic competition also lead to success in life after college.

Kent State Golden Flashes’ First Home Game Takes Place Aug. 29 With Pomp and Pageantry
The Kent State Golden Flashes first home game on Aug. 29
will feature fireworks, a 1,500 balloon launch and more.
Coming off a record 11-win season, Kent State football’s next journey begins Thursday, Aug. 29, hosting Liberty University at 6 p.m. inside Dix Stadium. The Golden Flashes return five All-Mid-American Conference players from a team that went 8-0 in league play and made its first bowl appearance in 40 years.
Thursday marks the debut of head coach Paul Haynes, who was a standout defensive back for the Golden Flashes from 1987-91. Also a former assistant coach at Kent State (1999-2000), Haynes was most recently the defensive coordinator at Arkansas in 2012.
Kent State has won eight straight games at Dix Stadium, dating back to the midpoint of the 2011 season. The Golden Flashes also carry over a 10-game regular season winning streak from 2012.
Liberty finished 6-5 in their 2012 campaign, during Turner Gill’s first season as head coach. In four seasons as head coach at Buffalo, Gill’s teams went 3-1 against the Golden Flashes and won the Buffalo Bulls’ only MAC championship in program history in 2008.
Dix Stadium gates open at 4:30 p.m., when happy hour begins with discounted prices on food and drinks until 5:30 p.m. Pregame festivities will include a giant American flag stretched over the field as St. Patrick School students sing the national anthem. Fans will then witness a 1,500 balloon launch, a five-plane flyover by Kent State's Aeronautics Program and fireworks. The game ball will then be presented by three skydivers.
Inflatables, caricature artists and more will be located behind the South End Zone from 4:30-6:30 p.m. In an effort to set a single-game attendance record at Dix Stadium, AMETEK will bring fans the largest fireworks display in Portage County history after the game. Let’s Take a Ride/Walk Down the Esplanade

Kent State University faculty, staff and students are invited to walk or ride a bicycle along the Kent State University Esplanade, which is now open, to the downtown Kent restaurant, Bar 145, during the third annual “Let’s Take a Ride/Walk” event on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 11:30 a.m. The starting point will be on the ‘K’ at Risman Plaza.
Free lunch, provided by Miracle on Main St. (M.O.M.S.) and Bar 145, will be served to all participants, and a goodie bag will be provided with promotional items and coupons to downtown Kent stores and restaurants. At the event, participants have the opportunity to hear from the executive director of the Portage Park District talk about the Hike and Bike trail options in the area.

Co-chairs of the event planning committee Alex Piteo and Marty Mundy say this town-gown event will benefit people who take advantage of it.
Organizers of the event say it is an easy stroll, and from the university’s standpoint, it is inviting people to do something healthy. The event aims to increase lunch and after-work travel from the university to downtown, as well as encourage trips from downtown to the university.
“The town-gown event is intended to bring awareness of the wonderful restaurants and businesses that we have available in downtown Kent,” says Rachael Decker, wellness coordinator with Kent State’s Division of Human Resources. “The walk itself also promotes usage of the University Esplanade for a quick walk or ride downtown.”

Department of Residence Services Hosts Google+ Conversation/Interview
Kent State University’s Department of Residence Services invites you to attend a Google+ conversation/interview titled “Charting a Course Toward Student Success: Advising from a Student-Centered Point of View” on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Studio A in the Twin Towers. The featured speaker is Norb W. Dunkel, associate vice president of student affairs for auxiliary services at the University of Florida.
This engaging conversation will focus on advising and other topics impacting the profession of student affairs in the higher education community, both from a national and international perspective.
Dunkel is an accomplished speaker, leader and educator. At the University of Florida, he provides oversight for the Department of Housing and Residence Education, the J. Wayne Reitz Union and the Department of Recreational Sports. These operations comprise of 4 million square feet of facilities, 1,800 employees and operational budgets exceeding $70 million annually. The housing operation is the largest in the southeastern United States with 165 buildings housing 7,600 undergraduate beds and 1,800 graduate students and their family members. The housing operations includes financial services, information technology, conferences services, administrative services, facilities management, residence life and education, building services, student leadership and engagement and payroll/personnel services.
Dunkel served as the 2008-2009 president of the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I). ACUHO-I represents 950 universities in 17 countries. He is the co-founder of the James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute, which recently celebrated its 21st anniversary, and in 2011, became the founding co-director of the Student Housing Training Institute at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Dunkel has authored or edited 17 books and more than 40 articles and book chapters on topics such as crisis management, construction and renovation, and advising student organizations. He recently completed a six-volume book set titled Campus Housing Management for which he served as co-editor and author. He has served as a consultant to more than 20 universities and has presented numerous presentations and keynotes to conferences and workshops. He testified twice before U.S. Congressional committees in Washington regarding peer-to-peer file sharing and copyright protection.
Before moving to Gainesville, Dunkel worked in campus housing at a number of institutions in the Midwest, including South Dakota State University, the University of Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Master of Science degree in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University.
In 1996, he received the regional and national Dan Hallenbeck Career Service Awards for his involvement as an advisor. He also received the 1998 Division of Student Affairs Outstanding Leadership and Service Award, the 1999 Charles W. Beene Award for Outstanding Service to the Southeastern Association for Housing Officers, the 2001 ACUHO-I Research and Publication Award, the 2004 ACUHO-I James C. Grimm Leadership and Service Award and the 2004 NACURH Ken Stoner Award. In 2010, he received the NASPA International Education Knowledge Community Best Practices Award, Global Partnership Program. In 2012, he received the ACUHO-I Foundation Parthenon Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership.
Dunkel lives in Gainesville, Fla., with his wife, Kim and their son, Nicholas, who is studying at the University of Florida majoring in English.

Kent Student Center Programming invites university departments to participate in the 32nd Annual Black Squirrel Festival taking place on Friday, Sept. 6, from 2-8 p.m. at the Kent Campus on the Student Green and Risman Plaza. The Black Squirrel Festival is one of Kent State's most beloved and popular traditions that attracts more than 3,000 students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Kent community. As usual, live, free entertainment, festival food, local vendors and Black Squirrel spirit will all be a part of this year's event. The movie Monsters University will be shown at 9 p.m. on the Student Green.
In order to participate and reserve your table, university departments are required to fill out a contract form and mail it or drop it off at Room 226 at the Kent Student Center by Aug. 30. Please note that if your organization is sponsoring a vendor, you must also have the vendor fill out a separate application, which can be obtained from the Kent Student Center Programming office. Fees may apply for the vendor.
