Kent State Presents Global Entrepreneurship Week
Kent State University will mark Global Entrepreneurship Week with a series of events Nov. 13 – 15 for students, alumni and the community.
Each November, Global Entrepreneurship Week connects young people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.
“Global Entrepreneurship Week is a recognition and celebration of entrepreneurial activities worldwide,” said Julie Messing, executive director of entrepreneurship initiatives at Kent State. “We saw this as the perfect opportunity for Kent State’s Blackstone LaunchPad to plan events and programming, as our services are available to all majors at Kent State. This also gives us the opportunity to highlight entrepreneurial activities that are already happening across the university.”
Kent State’s Blackstone LaunchPad program emphasizes entrepreneurship as a viable career path and gives Kent State students, faculty and alumni the skills, knowledge and guidance they need to start new companies. The program, which accommodates all students regardless of major and involves local entrepreneurs as mentors, started offering services to students in late May and celebrated its official grand opening on Sept. 28.

Upcoming Kent State Men’s and Women’s Choruses Promises to Be Inspiring

The Kent State University Men’s and Women’s Choruses will perform Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Auditorium at Cartwright Hall. Cartwright Hall is located at 650 Hilltop Dr., with free parking located off of Terrace Drive.
Each group will perform its own collection of chorus literature, as well as a collaborative piece to close the show. Douglas Beery conducts the Men’s Chorus, and Dawn Wagner-Casey conducts the Women’s Chorus.
The Men’s Chorus performance will include “Freedom Come” by Ben Allway, “In Taberna” from “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, “When I Hear Music” by Michael Martin and “Fight on for KSU!” by Wagner-Casey and Chad Kendall. The Women’s Chorus will perform works including “Hotaru Koi” by Ro Ogura, “Surrexit Pastor Bonus” by Felix Mendelssohn and a traditional Kenyan piece called “Wana Baraka.”
Both the Men’s and Women’s Choruses tour regularly and frequently collaborate with other Kent State ensembles. Students from a variety of disciplines and majors participate in the Kent State Men’s and Women’s Choruses.
The Kent State Women’s Chorus performs works selected from a variety of periods and musical styles. The Kent State Men’s Chorus repertoire includes many styles with special emphasis on the standards of male chorus literature.
Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors, Kent State staff and faculty, all non-Kent State students, and Kent State graduate students. The event is free for all Kent State full-time, undergraduate students. Tickets are available weekdays noon to 5 p.m. at the Performing Arts Box Office, located in the lobby of the Roe Green Center in the Music and Speech Building at 1325 Theatre Dr. on the Kent Campus. The Performing Arts Box Office accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover, in addition to cash and checks.
The Cartwright Hall box office will open one hour prior to the performance for walk-up sales, and will also accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Tickets and more information are also available by calling 330-672-ARTS (2787) or visiting www.kent.edu/music.

The Kent State University School of Theatre and Dance will present an evening of choreography created by dance faculty members on Nov. 30 – Dec. 2. Dance ’12: Winterplay will be presented on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at the E. Turner Stump Theatre in the Music and Speech Building at 1325 Theatre Dr.
Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for Kent State faculty, staff and alumni, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students under 18 years of age or with a college ID. Tickets are free for all Kent Campus, full-time, undergraduate students. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Performing Arts Box Office at 330-672-ARTS (2787) or through www.dance.kent.edu. Box office hours are Monday – Friday, from noon – 5 p.m. and one hour prior to each performance. E. Turner Stump Theatre is fully accessible and has ample, free parking.
The concert highlights the versatility and diverse artistic approaches of the Kent State dance faculty members Kimberly Karpanty, Erin LaSala, Joan Meggitt, Bill Sallak, Erin Smith and Barbara Allegra Verlezza. Faculty, student and alumni dancers will perform world premieres of modern dance and jazz works, and members of Akros Percussion Collective –Matthew Dudack, Jeff Neitzke and Dance Music Director Bill Sallak – will perform “Musique de Tables” by Thierry de Mey.
Dance ’12 is a collaboration between faculty and students in the School of Theatre and Dance and involves more than 75 dancers, designers, faculty members, crewmembers and staff. Actor and director Eric van Baars, who will provide background information and insights about each piece prior to its performance, will host the concert.

program on Nov. 17 and 18.
The Kent State University Opera program will present Lovesick Maidens, Their Men, and More, a medley of opera scenes on Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Wright-Curtis Theatre in the Music and Speech Center, located at 1325 Theatre Dr. on the Kent Campus.
The show will feature opera scenes in English, written by American and British composers. Associate Professor of Voice Jay White, and Assistant Professor of Music Marla Berg will direct the scenes. The production features a company of 24 students, including music performance graduate students Lindsey Sandham Leonard and Darryl Lewis.
“Trouble in Tahiti” by Leonard Bernstein, “The Old Maid and the Thief” by Gian Carlo Menotti, “Susannah” by Carlisle Floyd and “Street Scene” by Kurt Weill with libretto by Langston Hughes, are among the many works represented in the performance. The scenes’ settings range from a castle to a graduation party and everywhere in between, each portraying the show’s themes of love and longing in a unique way.
Music performance graduate student Tatiana Kubatina will accompany the scenes on piano. The evening’s final scene, Act II, Scene 1 from The Tender Land by Aaron Copland, will feature choreography by Tracy Pattison, assistant artistic director at Verlezza Dance.
Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors, and Kent State faculty and staff; $5 for students with valid ID or under 18; and free for all full-time, undergraduate Kent State students.

Each year, in addition to the fall opera scenes performance, Kent State Opera also presents a full opera production with orchestra in the spring. This year’s spring performance will be held March 15-17, 2013 in the Ludwig Recital Hall.
