National Teacher of the Year to Speak at Kent State University

Michelle Shearer, who was recognized by President Obama as the 2011 National Teacher of the Year, will present a Gerald H. Read Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 4:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Kiva.

Shearer teaches Advanced Placement Chemistry at Urbana High School in Frederick, Md. Previously, she taught high school chemistry and mathematics at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick.

As the daughter of two teachers, Shearer says that education was so central to her life that she recognized from a young age that she wanted to become a teacher. While studying at Princeton University, she had the opportunity to learn sign language and volunteer to teach a deaf fourth grade class. From that point on, she knew that she had to become a teacher. She holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Princeton University and a master’s degree in deaf education from McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. She is also certified in special education.

Shearer is an advocate for STEM education for all K-12 students, and successfully reaches those who have been traditionally underrepresented in scientific fields, including students with special needs and those from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. Her teaching methods rely heavily on real-life applications of scientific concepts. "When students feel connected to not only the teacher, but also the subject itself," she says, "they quickly become eager to explore."

Women Faculty Brown-Bag Presentations

series this spring semester, highlighting women faculty at
Kent State, their current publications and research, and areas
of expertise.

The Women’s Center at Kent State will host a brown-bag series this spring semester, highlighting women faculty at Kent State, their current publications and research, and areas of expertise. Several openings are currently available for faculty members or their graduate students, if appropriate.

Brown-bag topics can be entirely designed by the presenter and given formally or informally in the library at the Women’s Center, typically from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays or Thursdays. The Women’s Center staff will help to promote the brown-bag sessions, provide technical support and beverages and chocolate for attendees.

Kent State Offers Complimentary Breakfast Briefing for Human Resource Professionals

Kent State University’s Center for Corporate and Professional Development, which serves Northeast Ohio’s employers with solutions for talent and organization development, is hosting a free breakfast briefing on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 8 a.m. The event is for human resource professionals, organizational leaders and those who manage employee training.

Participants will:

• Hear from organizational leaders who have implemented annual training plans in partnership with Kent State’s Center for Corporate and Professional Development
• Meet the facilitators and learn about their approaches to training adults
• Learn about the many programs and services offered by the Center for Corporate and Professional Development at Kent State
  

The Center for Corporate and Professional Development provides onsite, customized training and public, open enrollment professional development programs in areas such as supervisory skills, management and leadership development, Lean Six Sigma and continuous improvement, project management and human relations skills.

Kent State University at Stark Hosts the 2012 Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art Awards

Kent State University at Stark will host the 58th Annual Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibit. The Scholastic Art Exhibition, featuring artwork from middle and high school students, representing schools in Stark, Summit, Portage, Wayne, Tuscarawas and Medina counties, will be on display from Jan. 17 through Feb. 2, in the Campus Center and the Fine Arts Building, located at 6000 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township. The buildings will be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m., and on Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The regional awards ceremony and reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. in The University Center at Kent State Stark.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the largest, longest-running and most prestigious recognition programs for creative young people in the United States. Kent State Stark is one of 90 regional partners that sponsor the local awards program. Middle and high school art and photography students will be awarded Silver and Gold Key awards for their efforts. Several special awards, purchase awards and the American Vision Award will also be presented.

Gold Key winners, American Vision nominees and Portfolio finalists will be forwarded into the national level of the Scholastic Art Awards judging process in New York City. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers presents the National Student Art Exhibition of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in New York City in June 2012. Approximately 300 artworks designated with National Gold Medals and National American Visions Medals will be included in the exhibition. Students will be notified if their work has been selected for a national exhibition. Select works will appear in the national catalog, some issues of scholastic magazines and other publications.
