Kent State University at Stark to Break Ground for New Sciences Building
Kent State University at Stark is responding to the current and future needs of sciences and health sciences disciplines by adding a state-of-the-art building that will feature educational technology, as well as provide a platform for increased student research through hands-on education and active learning.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sciences building will be held on Wednesday, May 15, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Kent State Stark on the walkway outside of Main Hall.
The new academic building, to be constructed by architecture firm Baxter Hodell Donnelly Preston Inc., will be Kent State Stark’s seventh major building on the 200-acre campus. It will be located adjacent to the existing Main Hall East Wing and connected by a bridge link at the second-floor level.
Continuing with Kent State Stark’s commitment to reduce the environmental impact of campus operations while promoting ecological sustainability, the Sciences building will achieve LEED® Gold Certification through the implementation of “green” architectural elements.

Save the Date! 20th Annual Celebrating College Teaching Conference, Oct. 24-25
The 20th annual Celebrating College Teaching Conference takes place Oct. 24 and 25, at the Kent Student Center. The annual conference on college teaching focuses on the four pillars of a Kent State undergraduate curriculum — knowledge, insight, responsibility and engagement.
Many favorite activities will be returning: the Provost’s Breakfast at 8:30 a.m.; followed by refereed round tables; invited round tables, including the Emeriti Round Table; panel discussions, poster displays; the President’s Luncheon; and the Glenn W. Frank Lecture. The conference culminates with a dessert reception at 2:30 p.m., to honor recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Awards and the Outstanding Teaching Awards and the wealth of teaching excellence at Kent State.
All conference events are free and open to all those who teach or support teaching at Kent State University. Instructors are urged to plan their course syllabi according to enable them to attend.

Tee Up for Scholarships Golf Outing, May 20
Kent State University's Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is hosting the first Tee Up for Scholarships, a special Kent State fundraising golf event on Monday, May 20, at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna beginning at 9 a.m.
“We have many people coming forward with donations, sponsorships and players to participate,” says Alfreda Brown, vice president for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “This will be a fun and exciting event for an important cause.”
The Tee Up for Scholarships golf tournament was created to raise scholarship funds for underrepresented and underserved students at Kent State.
“At an event like this, people are going to get together to raise money for something great, while also having fun,” says Gina Campana, special assistant in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We want to bring awareness to the fact that a lot of juniors and seniors run out of the funds and support they need.”
Interested participants for the golf outing are encouraged to form teams consisting of four players. The cost is $475 per team or $125 for an individual player. Each registered person will play an 18-hole round of golf and receive a breakfast and lunch buffet, a T-shirt and opportunities to win awards.
Campana says donations have been received from businesses around the Kent, Akron and Ravenna areas. In addition, the event is sponsored by the Diversity Advisory Board in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the board has assisted in obtaining sponsors from across the country.

Kent State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication to Host Second Kent Multimedia Workshop
Kent State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication will host its second Kent Multimedia Workshop—a three-day, hands-on video and photography multimedia storytelling workshop—June 6-8 in Franklin Hall on the Kent Campus.
Media professionals, faculty members, students and others interested in polishing their multimedia skills will work closely with five photography and multimedia educators to learn the skills they need to tell narrative stories using multimedia techniques.
"Our workshop is an outgrowth of the Keystone Multimedia Workshop, held each year at Penn State,” says Kent State lecturer and student media adviser Susan Kirkman Zake. “We thought it would be great if the Penn State faculty joined us in Kent to teach the same type of workshop in Ohio."
Zake and her husband, Bruce, an adjunct photojournalism instructor, have traveled to State College, Pa., the past four years to teach the Keystone sessions. They will be joined in Ohio by Penn State senior lecturers Curt Chandler, John Beale and Will Yurman, all award-winning journalists before beginning work at Penn State.
Participants may use Kent State’s equipment on a first-come, first-served basis. Supplies are limited, so attendees are encouraged to bring their own gear. Franklin Hall labs are equipped with Macintosh computers running the Adobe CS6 suite.
The workshop has financial support of the Akron Beacon Journal, The Plain Dealer, the Ohio News Photographers Association and Kent State’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Start Planning Your Events for Homecoming 2013
Although Homecoming will not take place until Oct. 5, it is not too early to start planning your Homecoming events. Many Homecoming activities are already being scheduled, including the Bowman Cup 5K Race, Kiss on the K, the parade, tours of downtown aboard Lolly the Trolley and more! This year’s Homecoming theme is “New & Old, Forever Blue & Gold.”
The deadline to register Homecoming events being planned by university departments or offices is Friday, Aug. 2. The registration form is available on the Kent State University Alumni Association’s website and can be submitted online. Registered events will be promoted on the Homecoming website and as space allows in other marketing materials.

Kent State Alumni Association Hosts Third Annual Alumni College
The Kent State University Alumni Association will host the third annual Alumni College on June 8. The event offers alumni an opportunity to visit their alma mater, reconnect with their peers and return to the classroom.
The 2013 Alumni College will focus on topics from the College of Arts and Sciences with renowned faculty members James Blank, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Robert Clements, research assistant professor, Department of Biological Sciences; Ernie Freeman, assistant professor, Department of Biology; C. Owen Lovejoy, university professor, Department of Anthropology; and Thomas Schmidlin, professor, Department of Geography. Additionally, former NASA astronaut and Kent State graduate Carl Walz, ’77, will serve as the keynote speaker. The day will also include a state of the university address from Kent State President Lester A. Lefton, and tours of campus and downtown.
