National Endowment for the Humanities Day Takes Place Feb. 27

National Endowment for the Humanities Day is Monday,
Feb. 27.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and Kent State University’s Office of Sponsored Programs invite you to meet NEH Senior Program Officer John Cox on Monday, Feb. 27. The half-day program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 310 A of the Kent Student Center. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

This half-day program offers a unique opportunity to learn about the endowment programs and special initiatives. From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be a panel session to discuss strategies for application writing. Individual appointments will be held from 2:15 to 6 p.m. Please make sure to register for your appointment, as space is limited. This workshop is free and open to all faculty, staff, students and the public. You are welcome to come and go between sessions, and refreshments will be provided. Parking is available at the Kent Student Center visitor’s lot for a $6/day maximum.

Kent State University Presents Spanish Film Series

Kent State University will present a series of three recent
Spanish films on March 2 and 3.

Kent State University will present a series of three recent Spanish films on March 2 and 3. The films will be shown in the auditorium in the Schwartz Center (Room 177), and will be in Spanish with English subtitles. A discussion will follow each film. Admission is free and free parking is available at the Schwartz Center.

The films featured in this event include:

La Mujer Sìn Piano (Woman Without Piano) Friday, March 2, 7: 30 p.m.
In Javier Rebollo’s new comedy-drama set in Madrid, a married housewife without friends or social contacts decides to escape her boring life and gets caught in an unexpected dilemma. This original, charming film, in a surrealist mise en scene, won prizes at the San Juan Film Festival and the French Cinespaña festival.

Los Condenados (The Condemned) Saturday March 3, 2 p.m.
In this 2009 thriller by Isaki Lacuesta, an exiled Argentinean who has lived in Spain for more than 30 years receives a phone call from a former comrade. The friend begs him to come home to help find the remains of a political activist who disappeared during the dictatorship.

Paisito (Small Country) Saturday March 3, 7: 30 p.m.
This film by Ana Dièz is set in Uruguay, a “paisito” or little country. It recounts the events surrounding a coup that took place in 1973 shortly before the coups in Chile and Argentina. The film presents the overthrow of the government by the military and the eradication of the Tupamaros through the lens of two adults who meet 20 years after they first met as children. An intriguing and subtle film.

This Spanish film series is made possible with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Kent State’s Institute for Applied Linguistics and the Department of History.

Kent Keyboard Series Presents Guest Artist Hyunsoon Whang

Special guest performers include Cleveland Orchestra clarinetist Daniel Gilbert and Miami String Quartet cellist Keith Robinson

Hyunsoon Whang will be the guest artist
at the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music's
Kent Keyboard Series on March 4.

The Hugh A. Glauser School of Music at Kent State University will continue its 2011-2012 Kent Keyboard Series with a guest artist performance by Hyunsoon Whang on Sunday, March 4, at 5 p.m. in the Ludwig Recital Hall located in the Music and Speech Center. Parking is free.

Born in Korea, Whang has delighted audiences in more than 500 concerts across the United States, Europe, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Japan and Korea. Having studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, St. Louis Conservatory of Music, The Juilliard School and Indiana University, she is now on the faculty at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla.

Whang is scheduled to play a colorful performance of works by Clara Schumann, Ravel, Chopin and Brahms. She will be joined on stage by guest clarinetist Daniel Gilbert and Kent State cello faculty and artist-in-residence Keith Robinson.

The series is co-directed by Kent State Artists-in-Residence Donna Lee and Jerry Wong.

General seating tickets are $10 (cash or check) per person at the door, but free for Kent State students, faculty and staff.

Alumni to Give Back at Nationwide Service Event

Kent State alumni participate in the 2011 National Alumni
Day of Service.

The Kent State University Alumni Association’s Fourth Annual National Alumni Day of Service on April 21 is a great opportunity for alumni to unite and make a difference in the community.

Volunteer sites are located in Kent at Habitat for Humanity and Loaves and Fishes; Akron at Akron Haven of Rest and Akron Canton Regional Food Bank; and Cleveland at City Mission - Laura's Home.

In addition, alumni chapters are also sponsoring projects. The following chapters have organized volunteer opportunities:

• Stark County Chapter: Domestic Violence Project, Inc.
• Lake County Chapter: Lake County Historical Society
• Central Ohio Chapter: River Cleanup
• Southern California Chapter: Veteran’s Administration Building
  

Work at most sites begins at 9 a.m. and continues until noon. Some times vary due to hours of operation at the volunteer locations.

“This is a great opportunity for Kent State University alumni to come together collectively and give back to their communities,” says Lisa Mascellino, assistant director of outreach for the Kent State University Alumni Association.

Last year, The National Alumni Day of Service brought together 117 alumni and guests who worked on 13 projects, providing more than 450 hours of service to communities.

Fifty-Two Kent State Women to be Honored at Annual Mothers, Mentors and Muses Event

Fifty-two women will be honored at the the Women's Center's
annual Mothers, Mentors and Muses reception on March 6.

On Tuesday, March 6, the Women’s Center at Kent State University will host the annual Mothers, Mentors and Muses Scholarship Fundraiser reception at the Kent Student Center Ballroom at 5 p.m.

Fifty-two women from various Kent State departments will be honored at the event. This year's honorees are listed below.

The event honors women nominated in any of three roles: a mother – someone who has helped “birth” new ideas and thoughts in others and has also served as an overall nurturing individual; a mentor – an individual who has been both a role model and a trusted counselor to others; or a muse – an individual who has inspired both creativity and academic enthusiasm in others.

Previously, 88 Kent State women have been nominated and honored. This year, 2011 honoree Randi Schneider, Ph.D., will speak at the event.

The Women’s Center, which was established in 1996, has been focused on advancing women in their academic careers. Funds raised at the event will fund $500 scholarship awards for two Kent State University female students. This scholarship has benefitted 16 students since its introduction in 2003.

Reception and Book-Signing for Publication that Celebrates Photographic History of African Americans

Americans in Cleveland, Ohio, will take
place on March 1.

Join authors Samuel Black and Regennia Williams on Thursday, March 1, at 5 p.m. for a book-signing and reception in celebration of their new book, Through the Lens of Allen E. Cole: A Photographic History of African Americans in Cleveland, Ohio. The event will take place at the Western Reserve Historical Society History Center in University Circle, 10825 East Blvd., Cleveland

The book was published by the Kent State University Press, in collaboration with the Western Reserve Historical Society.
