Brown Bag Lunches Offer Tips on Research Funding
A series of brown bag (bring your own) lunches this summer in Kent State University’s Division of Research and Sponsored Programs will offer tips and updates to faculty seeking federal research funding. All lunches will be held in Cartwright Hall Room 141.
The topics and schedule:
June 26: Serving on Study Sections. Learn about the pros and cons of serving on a study section and the training programs that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers for new faculty who would like to participate.
July 23: The New NIH Resubmission Policy. Find out about the new policy and how to prepare resubmissions of proposals or new proposals by the October deadlines.
Aug. 21: R15 (Academic Research Enhancement Awards) Applications. Issues related to submitting or resubmitting NIH R15 proposals will be discussed. R15 grants support small-scale research projects.

Start Planning Your Homecoming Events
Kent State University departments and offices have until
Aug. 22 to register their Homecoming events.
Although Homecoming will not take place until Oct. 18, it is not too early to start planning your Homecoming events. Many Homecoming activities are already being scheduled, including the Bowman Cup 5K Race, Kiss on the K, the parade and more!
The deadline to register Homecoming events being planned by university departments or offices is Friday, Aug. 22. The registration form is available on the Kent State University Alumni Association’s website and can be submitted online. Registered events will be promoted on the Homecoming website and as space allows in other marketing materials.

11th Annual AMETEK Tree City 5K Set for July 5

County. This year's race will take place on Saturday,
July 5, beginning at Dix Stadium.
The 11th annual AMETEK Tree City 5K benefiting the United Way of Portage County will take place on Saturday, July 5, beginning at Dix Stadium. Again the race will be a part of the annual Kent Heritage Festival, and the money raised will benefit the United Way of Portage County. Kent State University is one of many sponsors.
The AMETEK Tree City 5K is a scenic point-to-point course, which will run from Kent State’s Dix Stadium through the Kent Campus and finish on the Lefton Esplanade. Last year, there were 258 runners who crossed the finish line in the Tree City 5K, and this year’s goal is 300 runners.
“The race has become a family affair for us,” says Phil Faluotico, director of engineering at AMETEK and chair of the race committee. “It’s the only race my two sons and I enter each year and my wife Lisa volunteers day of the race and solicits sponsors.”
Faluotico acknowledges the contributions and support of race director Greg Dykes in making this year’s race happen.
Participants can pre-register online through July 2. The pre-registration fee is $25, and the fee for participants registering the day of the race is $30.
Check-in on race day will be from 6 to 6:45 p.m., rain or shine, at Dix Stadium. The race will begin at 7 p.m., and the race course closes at 8:30 p.m. Strollers are now permitted in the race. There are awards and cash prizes for qualifying participants. Awards are given for the top three male and female participants overall, top masters male and female participants, top grand-masters male and female participants and top three in age groups.
An after-party, which has become a tradition of the race, will be held for participants 21 and older. The party will take place at the 157 Lounge in downtown Kent immediately following the race.
Next year, the course will change from a "point-to-point" to a "loop" course. The race will begin and end at the downtown entrance to the Lefton Esplanade.
“We hope to increase business participation with a common kickoff area and finish line,” says Faluotico.

Tolloty Technology Incubator Community Open House

Kent State University at Tuscarawas and the Tuscarawas County Community Improvement Corporation will hold a community open house for the new Tolloty Technology Incubator on June 24 from 4-6 p.m. Located at 1776 Tech Park Drive N.E. in New Philadelphia, the new facility is the gateway to the Tuscarawas Regional Technology Park, located off University Drive N.E.
The Tolloty Technology Incubator is a state-of-the-art science, technology, research and development facility. It was developed to cultivate and nurture technology-based entrepreneurship and stimulate the regional economy through new business development, business expansion and the creation of high-tech, high-skill jobs. It also will provide academic opportunities for Kent State Tuscarawas students through co-ops and internships, as well as serving as a forum for students to investigate and launch their own enterprises.
Guests will be able to tour the $5.4 million, 27,000-square-foot facility, seeing both flex tenant space and finished tenant space. There also will be demonstrations of the high-tech training room and informational displays in several rooms. The contemporary designed Tolloty Technology Incubator also features a wet lab, conference rooms, reception area, office spaces, shipping and receiving area, and a computer network operating center for servers, data storage and network operations.
Refreshments will be served and parking is free.
