Kent State Planetarium Presents The Skies of Winter: Holidays in the Planetarium, Dec. 9, 10 and 16
The Kent State Planetarium will feature its holiday
presentation, The Skies of Winter: Holidays in the
Planetarium, on Dec. 9, 10 and 16.
Kent State Planetarium will feature its holiday presentation, The Skies of Winter: Holidays in the Planetarium, on Friday, Dec. 9, Saturday, Dec. 10, and Friday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m. in room 108 of Smith Hall on the Kent Campus.
“Our traditional holiday presentation continues this year with an exploration of the skies of winter and their connection to religious and cultural observances throughout the world,” says Kent State Planetarium Director Brett Ellman. “Join us while we explore what you can see in the lovely skies of winter, and how the people of the world structure their lives around the heavens.”
The hour-long program is open to all, but is not recommended for children under the age of six. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Call 330-672-2246 to make a reservation. Persons needing special accommodations should call at least one week in advance of the show.

The Kent State Stark Concert Band Welcomes a New Conductor
Richard Kibler is the new conductor
for the Kent State Stark Concert Band.
The Kent State University at Stark Music Department will present a concert of classic marches, big band music and holiday favorites performed by the Kent State Stark Concert Band on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. in the Kent State Stark Fine Arts Theatre, 6000 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township.
The concert is free and open to the public; however, tickets are required and may be obtained by calling the Kent State Stark Theatre Box Office at 330-244-3348, Monday through Friday, from 1 to 5 p.m.
The award-winning ensemble, comprised of talented high school and college students, faculty and community members, is now under the direction of Richard Kibler, who took over for Patricia Grutzmacher, Ph.D., founding conductor of the 26-year-old band. Kibler’s first concert will include selections by composers Pietro Yon and John Stafford Smith, as well as arrangements by Chip Davis and John Higgins. Grutzmacher will be highlighted as the guest conductor during the program.
Kibler is currently in his 12th year as music administrator/band director at Lake Local Schools. Prior to this position, he taught at Archbishop Hoban High School, Tallmadge City Schools, Stow-Monroe Falls City Schools and Barberton City Schools. During his tenure in public schools, he has been recognized as an outstanding educator by his peers and students in three different school systems.
Bands under his direction have consistently received both excellent and superior ratings at district and state Ohio Music Education Association large group adjudicated events in all classifications. Currently serving as president of the District 8 Ohio Music Education Association, Kibler is an educational consultant for Alfred Music Publishing Company and an adjudicator for the Ohio Music Education Association, in addition to his administrative and teaching responsibilities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Kent State University and a master’s degree in music education from The University of Akron.
